My brother had a '94 E-GT for a while and it needed quite a bit of work continously. I
HATED working on that car. They shoe-horned a 1.8L Miata engine under the hood and that didnt leave any room to fit human-sized hands anywhere to service the usual things that go bad (alternator, water pump, v-belts...etc). Parts are not that expensive because of the interchangeability to the Miata. The one biggest PITA was with the V-belts though.
[story]
One day, after driving thru a big puddle, it threw the belts off the pulleys. We thought... no big deal we will just reinstall them. About 50 miles later it threw the belt again... and then again. Got new belts... threw them. WTF!!??!! It turns out that particular car uses a directional v-belt. When installed backwards, it would creap up the pulley and be thrown off. Once we installed it correctly, it worked just fine from there on. It just baffles me that after 5-6 attempts to reinstall the belt, we installed it wrong every time.
Other issues with it: Brakes - all 4 calipers were prone to the slider pins freezing, and the rear pistons froze in the calipers. Rotors would warp quickly (thank god for Murray's lifetime warranty on pads and rotors).
Aside from all the headaches from it, it was a fun car to drive. Decent, rev-happy power, OK handling, and it got 34 MPG on the hwy.
