Hey everybody i am new to motown muscle! I was wondering cause i want to get into high performance engine tuning but i dont really know where to start without dropping everything and going to school. So are there any good books or manuals that i can read or websites to go to. Thanks for everybodys time!!!

Best Advice I can give you is to start by learning things like engine operational theory. Get yourself versed enough to pass advanced engine diagnostics, engine mechanical, Electrical, and automatic transmission ASE certifications. Then get some real world work eperience.

Once you get there then you will be ready to begin to learn how to work on the calibration side of things.

Or you could go to college get a EE and an ME and get a job at one of the BIG3.

I agree that this is your best bet, however none of the OEM manufacturers will just throw you into calibrations. It will take a while, and a lot of knowledge to do so.

Actually, I went to school at Oakland U and this girl in my class did a summer internship at GM and her project was transmission calibration for some Suzuki project GM was doing. You just have to have the correct education, and be there at the time.

I work at one of the Big 3, doing this type of stuff, and interns don't exactly work on projects alone. They mostly shadow others to gain experience in the field, and hopefully be picked up once they graduate school. She may have assisted though.

No, she actually did the cal, and I didn't say she did it alone. I talked to her in depth about it, and she knew the shit inside out. It had a base cal when she started, and she work with the head calibration guy who was responsible for the whole cal, same as any OEM engineer would on a homoligation type program. I am thinking it was an existing Suzuki that was being homoligated for the US market. It would have been mid 90's.

I love rod racing in general but i love formula one and big gt cars like the speed gt series and also the alms series. i really respect any effort in racing as cheesy as that sounds. i work at golling in lake orion. just votech through high school and what i picked up from talking to people, reading and from the nissan store i worked at i learned the most from the master tech there.

There was a member on here (his first name was Aaron) who wanted so bad to be on an NHRA team, that he went to a race one day, and went up and down the pits asking if they were looking for anyone on their team. He finally got a hit, and last I heard he was a full time crewmember for someone. It started off that they literally had a guy quit, then mailed him a plane ticket to come to a race for a "tryout".

Sorry not getting back to you..Been a bit under the weather

I think they guys on here are pointing you in the right direction.
There is all kinds of areas in Motorsports from Engines, Body & Chassis, Drive Train, Electronics, Machining etc... You might even find that Journalism is your ticket by reporting on new tech-mech stuff.

First things first while your young.. SCHOOLING!!! If you doing have the funds of the grades for a Big U..go to community college and work your way up!!! Hit the Liberal Arts, Math, English, Computers, Econ, Science, History, Humanities, Philosophy among a few until you figure what Major you want to pursue. If your a motor head focus on Computer, Math, English and History. Learn another Language. This is very important...makes your self a marketable person.
But get it done AND DONE NOW!!!!!

You don't have to become a ME or a Double Eagle. Hell I seen so many ME's and EE's out of Stanford and MIT that couldn't find there ass with both hands much less get into racing. That doesn't mean their not smart.. On No!!!
They just don't process the drive at what it takes to be part of the Hot Rodding World.
Fast Sports, with Fast Moving People that's Hot Rodding. Away from home, traveling a lot!!!

Wish you all the best..Now get your ASS in School!!! Make the Call today to local Community College to talk to a counsellor.. It's free and well worth it.
The days of a good wrench are gone...no one is going to hand it to you!
;)
