Engine run-on?

My brother's been driving his fiance's 2001 (I believe) Grand-Am with the 2.4l engine. Recently, whenever he turns the car ignition switch off to shut off the car, all the electronics in the car shut off like normal, but the engine will continue to run for another 30-45 seconds before finally shutting off. Any ideas?

does it sound like it is all 4 cylinders or just 1 or 2 ? If it is just 2 random cylinders it could be a leaking injector. Common with those injectors. If the engine just keeps on running I would test out the ignition switch. May not be releasing the ECM power lines in a timely fashion.

X2....I was thinking the same thing.

Thanks, ignition switch was the first thing I was going to check, didn't even think about leaking injectors.

This car has had some strange electrical gremlins for a while so I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to the switch.

also, has the cooling fan been rigged to run with the key on? I have seen where they were tied into a ECM feed, and turning off the key kills the ignition power feed, but the fan still spinning generates enough power to run the ECM till it slows down, usually 30 seconds or so
