I just popped the intake off my 3800 SC and it is full of sludge.

(I am not the original owner)

Has anyone ever used a removal product / cleaner that worked?

CD2 oil detergent is avaiable at walmart. Run it for a few oil changes and also buy a good high detergency oil and short up the oil change intervals to 700 miles for a few times. should clean it right up.

x2 make sure you change it alot though

Prolly didn't have many oil changes. Hopefully that cleaning detergent suggested doesn't send crap into the pan and get sucked up by the oil pump and clog the screen. That's usually what happens after and engine flush.

leave it alone. Ive seen many engines have problems after people try to flush them out

Yeah I ran GM's recommended top end cleaner through my Camaro at the specified interval (while under warranty). And it must've loosened something up and scoured a lifter. Thankfully they found and fixed said lifter issue under warranty. If you do run a cleaner, definitely change the oil frequently and try to keep the gunk out of the oil pick-up.

It is the same detergent they put in regular motor oil. It is just a concentrate. It won't hurt the motor but it will slowly disolve carbon accumulations. Slowly being the key word. after about 5-10 oil changes it should have removed 80% of the sludge and the really hard deposits aren;t going anywhere.

What are your thoughts on Rislone? I have a guy tell me years ago that it was ok to use. He worked at the APE division in the Tech Center in Warren.

IIRC it is just a linseed oil based additive with some automatic transmission fluid components put in it. I personally just use the oil detergent. Stuff works great even on noisy lifters. but it isn't aggresive which is why I like it. You don't want to dislodge to much stuff to fast.

I hada jeep once that was sludged up, i went to town with a shop vac and sucked out what i could, then left it
