Employment needed.

Kind of a bad title but it's all I could come up with.

As some of you may know I've been working out of my garage for the past few months. Working on just about anything that will come threw the door. Motorcycle. Atv. Lawn equipment and so on. I've been trying to save up the cash to go to school to be a motorcycle mechanic, but my past medical bills took quite a bit of that so that may not be in my future for a while.

On topic I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cars. I've been trying to get into a quick lube shop to get some actual automotive and shop experience under my belt so I can just get ASE certified and move up in the industry. But I can't get hired in anywhere due to not having experience. Don't matter if I know my way around cars or not the shops just want experience. I've had about 5 phone interviews and once they see it don't have experience it all goes out the window.

Does anyone here own or know of a shop semi local to me that would consider hiring me in as an oil change tech or just general shop help so I can get so I can get the experience under my belt ? If so please shoot me a pm. I can give more details as to what all I can and know how to do.

Only advice I have is when they ask about your experience, just tell them that you're an up and coming car guy that can bust out some killer dance moves with a broom. And start there. Sweeping floors and cleaning windows. Once they get to know you and get an idea of how motivated you are, you'll eventually gain their trust to do oil changes.

It might suck for a while but unless you know someone or have experience you're stuck at the ground level.
 
try dealers, they always need lube/tire guys they usually pay hourly to keep cost down. they cant pay the high dollar techs to do oil changes (not to mention most wont because its "beneath" them) but them once you get more certs and more experience you can move up.
 
You can and have to take state tests to be employed in Michigan. Don't have to have the 2 years history like ASE
 
Keep firing off resumes for any positions. Tailor your resume to include key words (hot words). This will get more looks at your resume when it goes through the computer system.

For instance, if they are asking for someone who is "punctual" and your resume says you are always "on time" you will not get the "points" for matching the job description. Even though they mean exactly the same thing. Most places (larger companies) put your resume through a program that counts hits this way. It might be a bit more work to keep rewriting it but it will pay off. Try Monster or other job boards. Kelly Services, Roush etc. They have plenty of entry level positions that require just state certs. Many places are pretty close to you.

"Fast" probably isn't accurate, although that may be relative. To move up at Belle Tire you'll have to be there a few years, although they will help you with your ASE certs if that's the route you take.
 
Friend went from Salesman to store manger in a year. Not assistant manager.

Another was tire turd for 6mo, then salesman.

DARKO's Shop? just get SOME experience
 
I work for Kelly Services at Ford in Livonia, shoot me a resume if you're interested in learning auto transmissions, I can give it to my rep, pretty much just basic hand tools for the most part, I work out of my Matco service cart
 
Correct me if I'm wrong. But can't u go to any Secretary of State and take individual test for state certification? I want to say it is only $6 or $11 per test. Get the easy ones like oil, lube, brakes, and more as you need or can. I had a friend that did this a few years back and said that they wee basically a joke. Anyone who has any experience around cars could pass them. And if you don't they give you the answers and you try again, and again. Maybe u could ask around to someone u know that has a shop or business and they could vouch for you. Even if you said that your job was to maintain a small fleet of company vehicles. Shit for $10 go get a DBA and open a business and vouch for yourself. Lol.

Pretty much, long time since I had to take them though, might have changed, I just do my ASEs every 5(7? something like that) years now

ASE's are 5 years. There's a way to send your ASE cert paper to SOS and get the state certs. Michigan still gets their money, but you don't have to take the tests.
 
I know Roush has listings for entry level mechanics/technicians at several locations.

And as far as going back to school, have you filled out a FASFA to see if you qualify for grants or loans?
