driveshaft repair

I am in search of a good place that can chop down a driveshaft, shorten it, and balance. The shaft on my car now was damaged during towing, and I really do not trust it in any way. I picked up another one to replace, however it is much much too long. Providing it fits in at each end, it should be a matter of cutting out a section and welding/balancing. Both shafts I have are aluminum.

Car is a 79 notch with a T5.

Any good locations that do not require the car in hand?

Swell. I just wanna get this damn car on the road. I would thought someone on CL would have had a shaft for sale, but it seems only autos are easy to find.

Just got off the phone with Shaftmasters, and talked with a nice guy. He says $80 + balance weights. Around $85 out the door. Which was within the $100 limit I kinda set in my mind as what I would pay for a new shaft.

I also talked with them about making me a custom shaft for my real project car which has a few carrier bearings and is a convoluted 4 part design and make a single 1 peice shaft.

Thanks guys for the helpful tips. And to think the xceed guys say your all a bunch of dicks. :P

Well, sadly, Shaftmasters (gotta be the best gay porn movie title ever) declined to work on it. They said because the driveshafts I have here are OEM Ford or something, they are too thin to buttweld.
They offered to custom make a steel shaft all new for $200.
I'll check the guy on CL who is selling a complete T5 swap and see if he will part with the shaft only.

B&L truck on 9 mile in Warren. Cheap and they do a nice job.

They don't have the aluminum welder to do the job, and said that if Shaftmasters declined, or could not do it, they couldn't either.

Really nice guy though.

The shady lookin joint on 8 Mile near Dequindre on Warren side has a steel one for $65. It is correct and so far seems like my best option. The thing weighs almost 2x as much.

don't get obsessed over shaft wieght unless your critical speeds are very very high. Shaft wieght means about suqat in terms of performance. Litterally. It means nothing.

I have a general policy about parts. When ever possilbe, never downgrade in anything, and always upgrade a part if you get the chance. I just got a voicemail from a guy who says they have both a steel and an aluminum one. $80 on the aluminum one, so I'll be happy there.
It looks like long one I have might be from a Ranger or maybe a van or something. I'll feel bad about scrapping it for the metal....

in 99% of the cases out there Steel/chromoly shaft are preferable to aluminum.

Bought a $20 steel shaft off Craigslist. Thanks for all the input guys.

Now to figure out how to wire up the ignition mod, and learn how a carb works. FI is so much simpler.
