New Tool to Ticket People Who Are Not Speeding
The most popular, and controversial, laser speeding ticket gun has added a tailgating ticket feature.

Traffic police have a new tool to add to their speed trap arsenal allowing them to ticket even people who are not speeding. For an extra $700, Laser Technology Inc. (LTI) will add a tailgate ticket feature to its popular 20-20 Ultralyte lidar gun ordinarily used to issue speeding tickets. The Colorado-based company convinced the Colorado State Patrol to embrace the technology, which it now uses to issue $41 tickets that come with 4 license demerit points to raise insurance rates.

Lidar guns are primarily distance measurement tools and only estimate speed based on multiple distance measurements taken in rapid succession. This makes the tailgating feature a simple addition to the device. An officer aims the laser gun at the front bumper of the lead vehicle and the distance is measured and the speed estimated. Next, he points the gun at the front bumper of the tailgating vehicle. The gun then performs a calculation to estimate the distance between the two vehicles based upon these measurements.

The LTI 20-20 Ultralyte speed measurement gun has caused controversy overseas as wildly inaccurate speed measurements have been documented by major British newspapers and the BBC. Nonetheless, many US police agencies have expanded their use of the gun to include the tailgating feature. In Oregon, police in Portland, Gresham, Clackamas, Salem, Grants Pass and Lane County use the device. Departments in Arizona, New Mexico and Tennessee have also begun tests.

and what is the legal "limit" for tailgating?

IIRC in driver's ed they say 2-seconds... or 10' for every 10mph

I just need a bumper sticker that says:
I BRAKE FOR TAILGATERS

LOL so on the expressway at the speed of 60 MPH I need 60 feet between me and the guy in front of me? LOL (my math is bad, so i could be way off on this). That's regoddamndiculous.

1 sec for every 10 mph, is the key isnt it??
lol no way...that would put you 718.7 ft behind the person in front of you at 70 mph...that's like 48 car lengths.

I've heard 2 secs is the standard. At 70 mph, that would be just over 200 feet, or about 13 carlengths. Basically you just gotta be far enough back so that if the person decides to do an emergency stop, you have enough time to stop as well...average for a sedan is usually in the 150-160 ft range from 60 so figure 200 feet gives you a nice safety net just gotta pay attention.

2 secs is good...10' per 10 mph well, if you're driving an open-wheeled racecar maybe.

Well seeing as most cars/SUV's are 15-20' long... 3-4 car-lengths doesn't sound unreasonable at that speed (although still a bit close). Then again if travelling down Southfield Fwy in the morning, doing 80 (in a 55 zone), 0.5-1 car length is the norm. That is regoddamdiculous if you ask me.
