I need to take apart my rear calipers to get them powder coated. Can I use compressed air to blow out the piston or do I need to you a tool to turn them out? And would I be fine with only removing the outer dust boot, piston, and inner seal, and leaving the rest in the caliper?

Rear pistons screw in......so no you can not blow them out with air. You can use the "special tool" from the local autoparts store which looks like a cube and fits 3/8 drive. Or you can redneck it and just use a pair of needlenose pliers.
