Starting myself off actually(on 2 wheels)!!

I *THINK* I have enough composure and self control to play it safe on a land rocket with too much power.

Looking around... The price for a used 80, 125, 250, 500 are all the same. By the looks of things, the 125's are listed higher than anything it seems. So I'm keeping an eye out for anything clean and cheap. Mid 90's to 05 vintage. :)

If you're going to be taking it to the dunes, which is what you want it for anyway, then get something light with a big tire. A bike like my 185 would be a bad idea since it's so heavy and would a need much wider tire.

Starter bike....... up to 500cc's?????

your gonna start em off right, lol

don't believe the hype about 450's much less a 500cc 2-stoke being easy to ride. a momentary loss of throttle control will put you on the ground and or in the hospital quick. trust me...been there. i'd suggest a 250cc 2 stroke at most, probably even a 250 four stroke or a 125 2 stroke for a starter. you can make a mistake a on smaller bike and still gather it in. mannish pride will always win in the end. that being said, i suggest a yz250, or a cr250.

enjoy..............i always did....

x2...

An 80/85 is way too small. Both engine size and bike size. A 125 2-stroke or 250 4-stroke would be a great "starter bike" if you plan on track and trails. If you want to hit the dunes though its really going to put a toll on the bike. Not to sure about a 250 4-stroke but a 125 2-stroke at the dunes is pretty much a guaranteed blown up engine. A 250 2-stroke or 450 4-stroke are great bikes as long as you take it easy at first. I've been racing for years and even I take it easy on a 500 2-stroke. I REALLY wouldn't recommend one for a first time rider.

good point on the 125 at the dunes. that'd be sudden death for sure. the sand robs tons of power. even a 250f isn't probably enough. i used to have a yz490, and let me tell you, that'd scare the shit out of anyone. it def. teaches you throttle control.

damn, all this bike talk really has me missing having one....

Thanks for the advice fellas. That's probably the reason I can find GREAT prices on 500cc bikes. They are a BIT much for 99% of the people out there... I've seen some dune videos of 2 stroke 80/125's in action and they actually seem to fair well enough. I don't think anything under a 250 4 stroke would be able to climb test hill though.

Leads appreciated! I've been through about 30 cities on craigslist.. haha

A 125 2stroke would be below a 250 4stroke though. The torque of the 4stroke is way better than a 2stroke. I can tell you it isn't something you want to try out though. If you plan on going to the dunes look for a 250 2stroke. It will be great for trails, track, and dunes. Just take it easy until you get used to the power and you'll be fine.
