Digital SLR Camera Help - For Christmas Gift.

you didnt buy the 75-300 they try to sell everybody? my dad bought it, cause he's a dunce sometimes. its a shit lens, im glad you didnt pick it up.

nice purchase though.

Thanks a TON guys.

I bought a cannon DSLR Rebel XS with 8gb card, a few filters, carrying case, 4 year warranty, yada yada.

I decided against the extreme zoom for now.. maybe down the road.

The sales guy is actually a photography student and knew the camera's inside and out, everyone of the 20-30 models they had on display.

Thanks again!
Congrats

It was a 55 - xxx lense, but i didn't buy it. i figured if she stuck with it, and used the camera that could be a B-day present. or something.

pffft. 10-20mm. that rarely leaves my cam.

afterall, wider is better.

i miss my olympus e-510. i sold it off when i saw they were bringing out a 520 to fix a few of the quirks it had. amazing starter dslr with twice the options of many comparable cost equivalent bodies. problem is lense options. you'll run out quickly unless you have the big bucks. If you are one of those that only needs the basic lense the olympus is as good as it gets for price/feature comparison.

cannon isn't bad at all but the body personally lacks as you pay for the name. Nikon has great internals but is much larger and heavier then the other two. there is no one dslr that is cheap and has all the best features. they all have their ups and downs so until you have some serious time on one it's best to go as reasonable as possible. everything is preference to so it's important to pay attention to what subjects she shoots and what point-click cameras she likes.

it really is amazing how well a point and click camera can shoot with in the right hands now days. good luck with it i'm sure she'll love it!

She'll be taking some photo's this weekend at the parents house.

I'll get her to post some on here, maybe you all can offer her some constructive advice.

Great shots - wide angle is next on my list.

thanks.

if i were you, and looking to go wide. i'd check out that new tokina 11-16 F/2.8. that thing looks pretty revolutionary IMO.

If anyone else is looking for a camera this Sony camera goes on sale for $550 with a wide angle & telephoto lens included in the price. I use the telephoto at the sporting events and wide angle when inside the house. Easy enough that I even can use it.
