Here are a few pics I took Saturday when my step-dad, his friend and myself went to the legendary Eastown theatre. For those of you in your fifties or later I have no need to explain the significance of this place for Detroit in 1969-1973. It took over what Grande Ballroom did when it shut its doors. The people/bands who played here is like a who's who of rock-n-roll, especially the Detroit bands, Iggy and the Stooges, MC-5, Alice Cooper. Both my dad and his friend Mike went to about 20 shows each in those years and to hear the stories of went on in these hallowed halls was pretty incredible. All the artwork in the black hallways Iwas told is original from the 70's. I took a boat load of pics so here are a few. I would say enjoy but it was really sad to see the condition.

That place looks like it was pretty trippy.

What happened w/it that it detriorated so much on the inside? I can see it kinda wearing out over time but it looks like it was demolished.

My guess would be roof and/or plumbing leaks. :dontknow:

Yeah this building has been stripped severly over the years, roof is gone over the stage and in one corner and there is no plumbing anymore to leak..I'll get a pic of what it looked like in a few.

We went to both the Grande and Eastown in the late 60's. You would see all off the popular bands at either place on any given weekend. Not only were the local bands playing there, all of the national groups did too. It was $2 or $3 to get in on a regular night. I remember New Years Eve at the Grande was $5 to get in and everyone thought it was highway robbery..I know they had Jefferson Airplane and Joe Cocker, plus Mc5 and probably SRC, Rationals, Seger and Teegarden and VanWinkle and a slew of other groups...

Thanks for the pics.....
