Dell Computers....yay or nay?

Dell computers are Good, Dell's Customers service is OK if u know 6 different launguages
IF you're going Desktop, Id just build it. Its not as hard as u think. Hardest part is the software, loading windows and doing all the drivers and shit. U can build your same Dell for half as much, Shit for what i paid for this desktop i couldve Built one TWICE as good EVERYTHING for still 300 less

i used to build a bunch of desktops, but i got sick of the mother boards burning out. i'd get a dell, they last forever, there warranty and replacement programs are the industry's best. i love my laptop i have a loaded inspiron 9300. the sonys are garbage in terms of quality and durability. i know a bunch of guys where the touchpad wears out, the screen cracks easily battiers die and just other random bullshit on it. my buddys laptop was destroyed by a motar attack and they replaced his dell no problems.

CHECK gotapex.com for killer coupon savings from dell. you usually can score at least 30% off sticker that way.

If you are looking to buy within the next few weeks, keep an eye on www.slickdeals.net They have a lot of Dell deals listed all the time with coupon codes. They only drawback is most of the coupons have a finite number of uses before they expire, so you just need to use it as soon as it is listed. Last year I was able to find a killer deal on a Inspiron Laptop for 50% off... I paid $800 for a $1600 laptop.

Is this any good, or should I look at HP's?

That's all you need for basic computing.

Check with your school and see if you can purchase a Dell with their educational discount. Dell has pretty decent education / health care discounts.

I sell computers to people every day who cannot stand their Dell and Dell's customer service. If I were you, check out deals at local retailers like OfficeMax and look at the HP's they have. We've had some killer deals on some nice ass machines lately!

Yea, but in five years I won't be able to go to your web site and get a list of every driver for my system. Home brew is all fine and good, but when the fit hits the shan it's nice to have real support.

Plus rolling your own really isn't less expensive than just buying an off-the-shelf Dell or HP. I just ordered a dual duo core 2 gigs ram, raid'd disks, nice video card, XP Pro, etc, etc, for around a grand.

I looked into building my own (which I've done every year or two for nearly 15 years) and it just wasn't worth the hassle.

my dell has been great, I need to clean some stuff of of it, but no problems that have been dell's fault, just microsoft, WAY better then the HP it replaced

I am on an hp now, that I bought back in 2002. IT has lasted pretty long IMO, but definitely time for a new one.

dell all the way! have worked at many computer stores and building your own computer is only good if you get GOOD parts, which costs money and can be even more than a new dell and then on top of that you have no operating system unless you already have a copy of one. If you have never built a system on your own, buy a dell. They have been the best so far with quality and you can pick all the parts you want to put in it, but i stay away from their tech support.

I have an IBM Thinkpad here for work that I travel with and at home I have a Sony Viao Desktop (been great), and a Compaq laptop (great so far too). Had 2 HP's before my Sony and had nothing but problems with the Hp's. So to make a point I think it is almost like buying a car for the top 4 brands that what has been good for me doesnt mean the next guy has the same luck! My next oone will be a Dell or Sony though!:dontknow:

had a compaq until the warranty ran out, then i threw it in the trash (true story)

Isn't that like buying a new car when the ashtray fills up?

in all the computer brands that i've serviced, i've found this... in general, custom computers break the most. its a pain in the ass to find drivers if you lose your driver cd. HP's REALLY sucked. They are better now that they teamed up with compaq, but i still wouldnt buy one. Sony's are good but expensive. Most of my customers have Dell's, and I've run into a few problems here and there with them, but overall I think they are pretty solid. I can't stand talking to their indian tech support dudes tho, i have them bump me to tier two. but i rarely ever have to call, so its good. I have 3 dell's and i've been happy with all of them

Exactly!

I was about to build my own earlier this year, but went with a Dell with a Slickdeals coupon. All of our computers at work I've built, and they do really well, but I went with the Dell and it was probably cheaper spec for spec than building my own with anything but the cheapest crap out there. I haven't had any luck with HP or Sony. Both were too proprietary; any time something broke it was either on-board or some off the wall custom size. I always used to like Gateway, but I feel the Dell is a quality product too, especially at the price. Hasn't given me one problem so far.
