crank rotates almost 1 full turn but stops in either direction

pretty much safe to say pistons hitting the valve right? Got an engine that will go rotate almost 1 full turn in the left and right direction but stops solidly with the plugs removed.

Piece of metal in the oil pump? Could be a lot of things. New engine never fired or is this a diagnosis of an engine?

Piston is hitting something. Could be a valve hung open, bent, or broken. Or a foreign object in a cylinder.
Do you have a borescope?

I'm betting a bent or dropped valve. In the line of work you're in you should invest in a bore scope! A nice articulating bore scope, not the cheapies at home depot etc...

Edit: those are pricey, even a non articulating, just flexible bore scope. Will let you diagnose stuff fast in ceised engines, and tell cylinder wall conditions.

does it work pretty good?

I've used ones from other companies, not snap on. But I've used it when buying snowmobiles, it's easy to cover up a burnt piston or scarred cylinder wall in 2 strokes. Get a good one, that way it will have quality lighting and fiber optics. The one i used had stainless braiding on the scope lead. It saved my ass more than a few times, well worth the purchase price in your line of work.
