Corvette troubles

My friend brings his C5 corvette over to my shop last night, he said he was having problems with the starter clunking and making noises. Drop the starter down and a couple pieces of aluminum fall on the floor. The one piece is mounting boss broken of the block, and the other broke off the starter. Can you say fucked. Looks like He needs a new motor, no way to attach a starter to this one. The shitty part is its a 99 so no warranty. Its a shame it hardly gets driven, car only has 14K miles on it.

Man id hate to think new engine for THAT. i would imagine if you got a good trained aluminum welder you would be able to weld something on the side of the block and then drill and tap it for mounting of the stater. Then buy a new starter.

Hopefully something like that could be possible. I don't think anything can be done with the motor in the car, so first thing he is going to do is get the motor pulled and we can see whats gotta be done.

Suck. I had a starter bolt get broken off in a block and as long as the motors in the vehicle, there isn't anything you can do.

LS1 blocks aren't that expensive. Lots of labor, but the parts hardware wouldn't be much as most of his gear could be reused.

Matt,

First off he is an idiot for continuing to start it clunking :)

Second, the starter broke first, the short bolt side and then when repeated use broke the block.

Third, Replace the starter that a "2 long bolt" version and weld the boss back to the block or JB weld it. I have seen it done a ton of time with 100% sucess. It does not need to be perfect by any means

Dont forget you will need a second long starter bolt to replace the shorty.

Yep continued starting was definatly not a wise thing to do.

Sounds like a plan, we are looking into getting this thing welded. What is the advantage to the two long bolt starter as opposed to the current design?

Thanks very much

Ya the advantage is they done break!!haha
The nose of the starter will be beefed up using 2 long bolts design. You can see where it broke how thin it is :). the thicker 2 long version has both sides beefed up with no thin section.

PM me if you need my cell #

PS Tell you Dad I said hi!
