Cop shoots biker in the back during a traffic stop

The officer kept yelling to raise his hands... The kid didn't... He put his hand on his leg/hip... He then withdrew his hand backwards... Instead of putting them straight up or foward up...

This is going to be a very close judgement either way... The cop didn't know the kid wasn't armed... The kid made movements that are very commen for reaching for a weapon...

It can go both ways... But I think the officer is justified...

law states an officer cannot shoot untill a weapon is in plain sight.. if a person reaching for anything is not justifiable for shooting... ans officer must see the weapon and be in direct fear for his and her life.. that guys family will get millions

Let's be clear, I don't think it was a clean shoot either. I think his adrenaline and fear got out of control. He still hasn't been convicted though. Innocent until proven guilty. We'll just have to see where the jurors side after both sides of the story are told.

The more this story is told, the more the cop is wrong. You dont have to be an expert to see what happened on the dash cam.
With all the bullshit of trying to say that cop is justified, I sure hope I never come across you if your a cop or a judge, cause your fuckin blind or something.
( You meaning the people in this post, not directed to you easy2cy. Just quoted you for your statement)

Cops found guilty, no surprise. The police depts expert witness found no traffic violations before taking off from the stop sign to the traffic stop. Same said witness stated there was no justification for the officer to draw his weapon.

Im glad the justice system worked properly in this case.

Damn, I probably should've been shot years ago.. Same thing happened to me.. Not on a Harley though... Maybe that was why!?

This doesn't make any sense. You are really suggesting that "shoot at center mass until the threat is gone" doesn't equal shoot to kill?

Threat is gone. Key phrase. Who says a cop is gonna hit direct center mass every time anyways? That's just the target. If one shot that is off mark but hits the person in the shoulder is what gets that person to stop being a threat because they dropped the gun and/or fell to the ground in pain, then yes, it makes total sense. Yes, most times it will be a fatal shooting. That doesn't mean they have a "license to kill" and that's all they are trying to do.

What's plain sight when it's in the middle of the night? What constitutes a weapon? If it looks like a gun but turns out to be a cell phone? You know they make guns that look like cell phones?

Maybe this makes a better statement, "an officer must see what appears to be a weapon and be in direct fear for his/her life" because that is enough.

Obviously in the case of this Ottawa Hills shooting, he never saw anything. Only an arm moving and the guy turning around. Totally unjustified shooting. Sure that guy might of feared for his life, but there wasn't a direct threat at the time. It sucks, and he's gonna have to live with that the rest of his life. He was only a part time cop. Didn't have enough training I guess and wasn't hardened.

i dunno if its just the shitty vid or what..but i didnt hear any "dont move, put your hands up" ect. Till AFTER he shot. Watching the video pisses me off even more. Im glad the cops going to jail. A cop is supposed to be trained to handle heated situations...this to me..was not a heated situation.. he was trigger happy. I know none of us can say exactly how to act in the situation..none of us were there. Though i still stand by what i said..i didnt see any type of threat..nor do i think the officer responded properly AT ALL.

/thread!

Although the officer was found guilty i think the city should also be held accountable for having an officer on the street that wasn't properly trained.

That'll come up in the civil suit i'm sure.

All I have to say is I pray I never get put into a situation where I have to make that call. Obviously the cop was wrong that's why he's guilty but when you're dealing with the scum of the earth on a day to day basis you never know when someone will pull out the gun on traffic stop and try and kill you. It's been done many times. A lot of cops have died because they didn't draw first or react fast enough.

I see both sides and unfortunately a simple I made a mistake and I'm sorry won't bring him back.

There are no two sides. There is only an inept cop who doesn't value other people's lives enough to think before shooting, or at least enough to be careful when pointing the weapon he is supposed to be trained on. Now a man is paralyzed for doing something that every single member of this site has done before. I hope the cop gets raped daily.

Not even one ounce of remorse. Very glad that he's going to prison. Hopefully he'll get hurt in there.

yeah, i doubt they take too kindly to power-tripping cops. Glad he didn't get off easy because he's an officer, they forget that their job is to protect, not to go around showing everyone who's boss

Just watched the dash cam vid again. The guy stopped fairly quickly -- i.e. he wasn't running. He was doing the right thing. Lights / siren went on at 3:47 in the clock on the top right, dude is stopped by 3:58, and then shot at 4:09. In the 22 seconds that everything went down, I'm more convinced than ever that the cop should be sentenced to the max. It's just more and more bullshit the more I watch. :pissed:
