Alot of training Officers PUSH "new boots" to write alot of tickets/make alot of traffic stops during the FTO program. Many will discourage the use of discretion, and focus on "aggressive" policing/enforcement. Alot of times, once the "new boot" is done with FTO, they are so used to doing things the way their training Officer wanted, that they just continue on until they see the light!

I encourage the new Officers in FTO to write citations and make stops to get the experience of dealing with the public and different situations. They need to know how to deal with a person who is upset with getting a citation and learn how to deal with it professionally, etc.

How about writing someone for drag racing... if you catch two cars on an industrial drive at 2am doing burnouts next to each other, but not actually racing?

Its really hard to give a blanket statement on what I would do or wouldn't do for a situation. Each incident consists different circumstances, different people, different attitudes etc. Their would be times I would write someone and times I wouldnt....it just depends. You understand?

i got a ticket last night in novi for 35 in a 30. (the officer gave me a pretty good break lol ) and since i have a clear driving record, in the remarks section of the ticket he put an (I) which he said was to reduce the charge to impeeding traffic. I assume this is just a reminder for him during the informal hearing to reduce the ticket, but i was wondering if i just took the ticket in to pay it if it would be reduced ? Sorry if its a stupid question ...but thanks in advance for the help

I'm just curious how departments handle calls about reckless drivers on the road? My question because I was doing like 72mph in the right lane going home and I am the type of driver that's always checking my mirrors. I saw a big ass white truck flying through traffic weaving between the lanes and got in my lane. He was FLYING.. He caught up to me and went to get in the left lane too late, I went half way on to the shoulder to avoid being rear ended by it (F250 diesel lifted) and got pretty pissed off by it. Dude had no reason to be going that fast in a truck that large or to be driving as aggressively as he was, so I called it in. The guy passed me like I was damn near standing still!


Do departments even do anything about it? Or do they just look up the info of the plate # and meet them at their house?

I had a crazy driver I was following for awhile not too long ago. Called the police, told them what was happening, the make/model and plate number. 30 miles later we call again. Nothing.

So in the end, reckless driver we followed for +/- 85 miles with not a single officer or patrol car even though we passed multiple departments.


After calling for a follow up I was told that because we were on a highway it was "too hard to do anything about" so they didn't send out a single car to try and pull this guy over.

Not a stupid question.

The court staff that "cash you out" cant reduce the infraction only the prosecutor/judge. The "I" may be a reminder for the Officer as well as a note to the prosecutor to let him/her know its ok to reduce it to impeding. I wouldnt just pay it, set it for a court date and take advantage of the possible break. You have nothing to lose.

I cant speak for every department but we will look into it, especially if you have a plate. Sometimes if you call when your driving there may be an Officer in the area to stop the vehicle if they are close. If you get the plate we will go and speak with the registered owner regarding the incident. If we didnt see the violation or alleged violation we cant issue a ticket for reckless. On some rare occasions the reporting person, ie you, can sign the ticket as the "complainant" but will have to testify in court.

Never be afraid to call, departments like Pontiac, Inkster, Detroit etc wouldnt do anything as they are busy as he!! and dont have the time to investigate such things.

Exactly. When your on a highway at those speeds passing through multiple cities/townships its very difficult to have a car actually on scene to investigate or that can get there in time.

i believe, you have to keep the vehicles vin plate on the dash, its illegal or something if u dont have that plate. and they must match the title.....i think

I see your in a different state (other than Michigan)...not sure what the laws are there..

Here I can see your driving history up to 7 years before the citations drop off (unless its a DUI/drug offense). Insurance may be able to see it up to 3-4 years.

I want to say the state/city has to retag the vin on the new dash for you and it can take a while. They wanted to do that with my car for some reason since its an assembled vehicle and i just never did it lol. havent heard anything from them, but its not like i drive it much.

Im gonna bet your right about SOS having to do the retag or some professional company, I just dont know the details. If you like I will try and find out.

I would like to know. Someone ripped the glovebox (and half the dash) out of my monte and I have a replacement, but since the plate is riveted to the dash, I wasn't sure what to do with it. I'd rather have it be done the correct way so I don't have to worry about anything later on. It is going to be a street car.
