Had 2 replaced on my 09 CTS in the last week under warranty and was wondering if the extreme cold had anything to do with them faulting.

Are they prone to failure under extreme cold conditions?

Had a code P0116 and message read engine over temp / AC system off, the cooling fans started running also and it was 5 degress outside.
 
I never had a low coolant alarm and I am sure that vehicle would have one on it.

Moran Chevreolt has it and I would hope that evac the coolant system to properly fill.
