Cool announcement about my startup

I've been meaning to update my motown brethren but it's been a wild month or two. I think at one point I traveled 22,000 miles within a 2 week period or something crazy like that. But it's been a blast!

Meet the Fall 2012 Companies!
09.13.12 | mwithers
It’s awesome to have Betaspring HQ buzzing again...because nothing livens up a place like 13 startups working their asses off. The Fall 2012 companies arrived on August 20 from across the US, including NYC, Ohio, Seattle, Montana, Connecticut, Boston, Michigan, California, New Jersey, Georgia, and Rhode Island.

The companies hit the ground running during the first two weeks, getting settled and taking part in a little game we call CEO Speed dating. This five-day affair challenges the CEO of each company to participate in five days of back-to-back meetings with 40+ mentors, investors, customers and community partners.

As we head towards the end of week five of the program, the companies are busy building, selling and prepping for our Open House on September 27. We hope you will stay in touch and we look forward to sharing the companies progress with you along the way!

Here's a picture of myself, our lead engineer, and some of our bike component suppliers in Taiwan along with our first two production bikes (not 100% complete but very close):

Here's a bunch of those involved knocking back some Taiwanese "gold" beer:

In that picture are the fork maker, frame maker, assembler, painter, trading partners, and then myself and the lead engineer. What a trip!

If people are interested, I can try and keep this thread updated with the latest progress.

Thanks for checking it out,
Sean

Thats very cool, that will sell like crazy. Are you going to offer something to retrofit that auto-shifter to other bikes, or will it be for your companys bikes only?

Congrats on the progress Sean. Hope things continue going well for the company.

Holy crap it looks like you've made a ton of progress on getting that going.

Congrats on being the only company on that list above I see that is making a physical product.

Sean that is great news! I love seeing someone put their dream into motion. Thats so cool. Huge congrats.

Thanks for the kind words guys. We are just starting to spool up now...long way to go!

All our prototypes (until now) have been retrofits but it's somewhat of a pain in the ass and ends up being expensive. There's no high-volume wheel builder in the US so you could actually end up paying more for a retrofit system than you could for the whole bike. On top of that, you need 135 mm rear dropout spacing (common for mountain and cruiser bikes, not common/rare for road bikes). We are kicking around the idea of a pre-built wheel retrofit system but nothing in stone yet.

Ultimately we'd like to offer our shifting technology to other OEMs in non-competitive styles. For example, we're starting with a cruiser/comfort bike and someone might want to put our system on a trike or recumbent bike. We'd love to get some OEM partners like that. We think getting the riding experience out there could lead to those types of opportunities.

awesome. my father should get one of these. he hashad 2 replacement knees but still insists on riding like 5+ miles a day

So the question everyone's been wanting to ask: Did you actually build this business by yourself? Or did the US Govt give you your idea, hold your hand, provide you with unlimited funding, and claim all of your work as their own.

Jeff told me he was going to Taiwan with you, very cool. Best of luck to you guys!
Jeff is the man. Not too many people who would burn up their vacation time to work. lol

We will find a way for anyone that wants to try one out to get that opportunity. We'll have our first 10 production samples ready to rock within the next couple weeks for demos, promo videos, and etc. Is he in Michigan?

Just these crazy mother fuckers (and a couple more not pictured but just as critical):

I love biking. Any area events planned? Let me know
when I’d have an opportunity to try one of these out.

Congratulations on the business success!
