Has anyone bought your own modem? I am tired of paying them $10 to borrow theirs.

What did you buy? I have the phone service, for now so I need one that will accommodate the phone.

Whats good, Whats bad? Looking to lower my payment to them. The less money hey get from me, the better.

I got tired of the same thing, but wanted to keep my number and got tired of the idea of no choice because I would lose the number.

I purchased a Motorola modem from Amazon. I purchased the Obiwan phone adapter from Amazon. I ported my number to google voice, since the obiwan has Google voice capabilities. I then logged it in.

So I now have free voice calls over the obiwan via Google voice.

I don't pay modem fees.

I no longer need the triple play, only double.

It's hard to make any good recommendations as Comcast uses eMTA instead of VoIP for their phone service. If you had VoIP service, I could point you in a lot of different directions, but as it stands now, there isn't anything in the way of an eMTA modem worth owning. While eMTA isn't a bad technology, there simply aren't many products on the market that support it. Those that are out there are the same units peddled by Comcast so they don't have much in the way of features or provide adequate wifi coverage. Another thing that makes it difficult is there are no standalone eMTA devices that let you hook your phone line to your router, every one of them is an all-in-one modem/router/eMTA box. Ideally, you'd want a Motorola SB6141 modem with a TP-Link Archer C7 router, but the telephony portion will be hard to nail down unless you dump the Comcast phone service and go with a VoIP provider. You can use something like an OBi200 VoIP adapter off of the router and get a number through Google Voice.

The only reason I have the landline was for 2 things. An ICD monitor and my alarm system. The ICD monitor co. just sent me a cellular transmitter. I have a call into my alarm co. to go cellular as well. As soon as they do that I will have no need for a landline. I will setup a Google voice number to give out. I do not give out my cell # to any companies.

I have bright-house, and also see I'm paying $5 a month for the modem.
Buttttt, they also just had to update my modem to a newer one that will work with 25MB/s and up.
I guess before my speed was lower than that, but not 25 is the slowest.

Are you really saving if you have to buy a new modem every few years?

Comcrap charges 10 per month. The modem Tin mentioned above is 69.95.

360.00 for 3 years. 69.95 for modem. Savings of $290.05

I think so.

I have the Obi200 that Tin mentioned....I call it the Obiwan...lol.

I bought my SB6141 back when WOWs 20Mb service was their middle of the road package. Now their mid-tier package is 110Mb, and the 6141 is still more than enough. At a max throughput of 360Mb/s, the 6141 is still relatively future proof. I've got almost 4 years out of it thus far, which would be nearly $500 in rental fees. Savings aside, most of the stuff rented out by the ISPs is junk anyway and having your own will save you the trouble of service calls. I haven't seen a tech since I got service to my house when I bought it.

Yeah I've had my sb6141 for at least 3-4 years now if not longer and it has paid for itself several times over. Plus it's absolutely rock solid. I don't see any reason to change it out for quite some time as long as I stick with cable for internet.

Thanks guys. As soon as I can get my alarm switched over to cellular the phone is gone. I'll get a google voice # for those who I don't want to give my cell phone number to.

Ahhh, ok...I thought the modem/routers I've seen were about $250 or so.
Must have been looking at something else.
I think my "rent" is only $4-5/mo, only have cable internet, no phone or television.

I found the same one Comcast rents online for $150, which had the eMTA built in. Unfortunately, the phone capability jacks the price up, but there are options out there. Comcast has a website showing their support for modems and features.

This is the setup i have. SB6141 and Archer C7. Works great. I don't have to deal wit the phone part though.

Well alarm company is coming out to wire for cellular. Phone service is cancelled. I am ordering the sb6141. I have a wireless router already.

Thanks for the help guys!

So, on the phone with ComCrap's wonderful customer service. The package they offered me on Friday is apparently not available. So they are trying to charge me $10 MORE per month to cancel the phone service...

This is why I absolutely HATE ComCrap. Worst customer service EVER!!!!!

Go straight to customer retention, you can't haggle much with the sales department.

Give it a day and call them back, state that a competitor offered you service for an X amount and ask what they can offer you for the same or a better price. Look up competitors in your area and see what their new customer deals are, customer retention is usually pretty good at matching or bettering those deals.
