I work for a small tool company doing design/detail cad work. The company is moving to a new building by the end of May. We do not have an IT department, I kind of play that role. Are machine department has requested as part of the moving process can we setup a network for the cnc machines. The cnc programs are currently transferred using 3.5 disk, or a usb thumb drive. The machine department suggested to me to use rs232. I have a Dell workstation that currently is running Windows XP on it set aside to be used as a cnc program server. Can someone give me some direction on what I might need to get this setup to run? Thanks.

usb all the way! our server at my work hooked to 10 machines constantly goes down so when the hub goes down all the machines are down. Usb is soo much easier to use.

USB might be a good way come to think of it. The down side, I think only one of three machines is setup for USB. It would probably be the easier way. Are head machinist said at one company he worked for they had a computer on a cart. They would take that computer to which ever machine they needed and plug a rs232 cable into transfer the programs.

Our shop we have a computer at each machine. Then all our programs are dumped onto a server and we grab them off that.
