Clunking into gear

When i put my car into any gear, it makes a clunk sound. It clunks harder when going into reverse. Engine mounts and tranny mounts are solid. I was told it could be a drive-shaft bushings, but im not sure of what those are.

68' 289 motor
C4 auto trans
86' Ranger body

U joints or too much play in the rear end. Probably the u joints though.

x2 , the only thing I could think if the guy said "u-joint bushings" would be a carrier bearing, but thats only when you have a 2 piece driveshaft
