Chromebooks?

Does anybody have one? I currently have a 2 year old Dell laptop, but dont use it for much aside from surfing the web. If so, how do you like it? I dont keep anything stored on my laptop aside from things like SSH/SSL keys and various shell scripts...things that take up hardly any space. How are they for a web surfing only machine?

I had one of the original ones and sold it. I think Jeff was the one who bought it from me. Before it I used a 10" Dell netbook running Windows7 so I was used to a full function/mini laptop. To be honest, I replaced the Chromebook with an Android tablet and didn't really miss it. There were a few things that I thought it was missing that may or may not be an issue for you. 1. I wanted to be able to play movies from onboard storage (ie when I was on an airplane). The newer ones may be able to do it but at that time it wasn't possible with the early versions on ChromeOS. 2. The file browser was almost useless. For instance when you downloaded files and wanted to do something with them (edit, email, etc) it was tough to navigate. 3. Battery life was good but without internet access it's functionality is very limited.

A friend of mine recently bought one of the new Samsung ones. He's used to iPads and Android phones and wanted something with a keyboard. His initial impressions: he misses the touchscreen but likes the keyboard for typing emails. For general couch-surfing he prefers the tablets. A touchscreen tablet with a physical keyboard like the Asus Transformer or the Microsoft Surface would be the best solution but they are all more than twice the price of the Chromebook.

I have a Nexus 7 right now that I usually use on the couch, but it nice having a keyboard. I might as well just hang on to my Dell with Debian installed...works great, but I was curious if it would fit my usage habits. Looks like Ill save my money.

I love my Nexus 7. My mom has a Transformer and it's pretty sweet but for the price the Nexus can't be beat.

Yeah its a great tablet, huge upgrade from the Sammy Galaxy 2 7.0 I had before. I bought 6 Nexus 7s for Christmas last year. I loved mine so much I got one for everybody.

I have the original one that Google sent out for free. If you only need to get to the web, there's nothing out there that will function like it does.

I ended up getting myself a Dell Chromebook 13 about a month back, pretty awesome web surfing machine. It looks like Google is bringing the Google Play store to ChromeOS, should be able to run most Android apps once it's implemented. http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...ith-all-the-android-apps-you-could-ever-want/ I must say, I really like my Chromebook. It's stupid easy to use if you're familiar with the Chrome browser, and it still lets me access a shell in order to do more geeky things. The only thing I don't care for is the non-upgradeable RAM, but ChromeOS and most Linux distros I'd install don't require near that amount anyway. 10/10 would buy again.

I've been curious about these but haven't needed anything so never bothered to investigate. Is there any advantage to these over a normal 12-13" laptop assuming you already own one?

If you already own a good to decent laptop, I'd skip out on the Chromebook. Mine was intended to replace a 7 year old Dell Inspiron 11z which had become far too long in the tooth to do much of anything. The old Dell was used exclusively as a web surfer with the occasional bash terminal session or writing operating system images to SD cards and USB sticks. For what I do, the Chromebook fits the bill, and if I did want to do more, I could wipe ChromeOS and put on a Linux distro of some sorts. ChromeOS and ChromiumOS (open-source dev version of ChromeOS) are both built from Gentoo Linux.

That's cool. Might be a good candidate for a garage web surfer and run remote desktop or something to a desktop for the couple apps I need Windows for. (AllData, GM service app, etc). I've considered buying one of those Intel stick pcs or whatever they call them and hooking it up to a bigass cheap LCD TV but I haven't been able to find a cheap enough TV[emoji38]Maybe this would be more practical.

You could do that, but if you aren't going to use the screen, grab a Chromebox instead. It's a ChromeOS desktop, they usually run about $150 to $200-ish.

Will tuning software we compatible with those? Example HPtuners and moates.

I bought a 10" Winbook from Microcenter and use that for HPTuners. It runs Windows10 like a champ and does everything I need to at the track. For under $200 it's a great tablet.

It might save by going that option then going with a new but is blemished laptop (Inspiron 3157) @ 370 shipped

Was searching the pub before starting another post. I'm on the fence with a Chromebook, and have been looking at the Dell Chromebook 11. Would like something cheap just to print eBay shippers and access USPS.com FedEx.com and maybe WordPress. Seems pretty light duty and straightforward, but after reading reviews on Amazon I am skeptical....
