chimney leak?

Got a little issue with some water making its way into the basement. It is coming from a little chute door that the furnace vents to I believe, and goes up the chimney. Question is, what is the most probable way the water is getting into the chimney? The crown is in poor shape and the bricks could definitely use some tuck pointing. Is forming my own crown the only way to replace it?

Is your water heater near the Chimney? Mine was and I thought it was the chimney but turned out to be the water heater.

But if your crown is messed up it may need some work. Good luck.

Could be the cap, bad mortor joints or a crack in the foundation.

Start with the cheapest and work your way down.

I went through the same thing with our old house. I caulked everything which helped a little, but in the end had the whole chimney re-done since the brick was in bad shape. I had someone on here do the work (not sure if they are currently a sponsor) - PM me if you want the name.

What type of ball park are you talking for what you spent to have the work on the Chimney done? Mine could really use some work.

Do you have a chimney cap? If so, PM Johnquick302 here on Motown, may be other issues going on.

I had the same issue with my Clinton Twp house last year. John (Kramer Masonary) came out and suggested I buy a cap cover, that fixed the issue.

The hot water heater is in the same room but I can see exactly where the water is coming from and its definitely coming from the chute.

Yes, it does have a cap on there. I think I'm going to try and repair the crown first, repair some of the mortar between the bricks and go from there.

I need a whole new chimney, mine's falling because of the liner. Who does some good cheap(er) work?
