Chevy Silverado 5.3 or 4.3 mpg?

Posting a separate thread from my ford Eco or coyote thread. I just spent some time at the gm dealer looking at the Colorado and the backseat is terrible! The seat folds up and there is all kinds of crap in the way, not a flat floor. Well this lead me to look at the silverado crew cab 4x4.

Can get the same pricing as a 2014 f150, and they are rated at 22 mpg with the 5.3 and I think 23 with the 4.3.

Anyone have any fuel economy experience they can share?

My 2014 double cab Z71 5.3 with 3.42s will average 20 mpg on my 15 mile commute to work when using 87 octane. This is with about 20% city driving/ 80% highway @ 70 mph.
 
I have an 08 5.3 and I get 19-20 going 75-80 on the freeway(includes the 10 or so miles to get to the freeway), would likely be more if I reset the clock while on the freeway.
 
The new GM engines are super fuel efficient compared to previous generations.
Though they are not as smooth as the overhead stuff, so if that's not important to you they are an excellent choice.
We have tuned the 5.3 and 6.2 LT's for a while now.
 
I think I'm going to test drive one of the 4.3's to see if I like it. Otherwise the 5.3 sounds perfect.

Don't care on the smoothness, good to know though.
 
I swear my 07 classic was better than my 14. Both had 3.42's. The 07 got 22-23 and the 14 is around 21-22 but I haven't driven it very much on the highway without my boat
 
A friend just got a 14 ext. cab with the v6 engine. My 13 4x4 with a 5.3 has a bunch more noticeable power. Strictly city driving I get 14-15mpg. Highway I get 22-23mp .
 
my buddy has a 14 double cab with a 4.3 and tows a 21foot ranger all over with it. Not tons of power but gets the job done
 
The best I've been able to get with my 2012 Z71 (5.3, 3.42's and 18s) is 20.8 mpg hand calculated, pure highway, speeds around 75mph. Not bad for a full size. I didn't buy it for fuel economy, though.
 
Thanks for the input. I didn't go into detail in this thread of why i was asking, but it's in my thread asking about ford Eco and 5.0 mpg. I need something that gets at least 20 mpg on the highway because I travel for work and the reimbursement for fuel rate is based on 20 mpg.

Sounds like I can do either and be fine. I am test driving both on monday (going with a Sierra, i like the looks better).
 
Well I already have two cars for myself (mustang and an explorer), so it isn't feasible for me to have a truck (which I need), a work car, and a mustang. Just don't have the room or want to pay insurance on all of the vehicles. As far as the ram, my company pays a fixed depreciate rate equivalent to 75% of the base plan vehicle (ford edge 2wd-20mpg), and then a per mile rate that is based on home base zip code of unleaded fuel. I've ran the diesel vs gas, and it doesn't give me any benefit since there is no provision to pay a diesel rate. I wish it did, that would be the obvious choice. I know that I sound like a total idiot whining about truck gas mileage but the fact is that I need a "crescent wrench" vehicle that gets above 20mpg on the highway. I don't tow often, but need the capability. My favorite truck for looks is the ram, and you can get 20 all day long with the pentastar, but I come from gm and ford families so that's the best discounts that I can get. My explorer has been a perfect fit for the vehicle plan, but I can only keep it for model year plus 3 yrs, and I don't want to risk any powertrain failure costs since I'm about to go out of warranty. I have decided on a gmc/Chevy, but I am on the fence on the 4.3 vs 5.3.
 
I have a 2012 GMC Sierra Quad Cab Z71...5.3 liter...I drive primarily highway...Depending on weather (T°) I can get 23mpg driving 75mph
 
I test drove some trucks today. I was surprised at how nice they are. I think they are nicer than the f150, which shocks me. As far as the 4.3, I was impressed and it should be more than enough power for most people, including me. As of right now, I am going to buy a 2014 gmc Sierra sle z71 with the 4.3. Good deals on all of the 14' trucks (ford, gmc, Chevy, etc) out there...
