Changing trans

Need some help or insite on changing my trans. I have a 2004 Denali Yukon xl awd. I want to switch it form awd to 2wd. Wondering if all I need is to take everything out and get 2wd trans and drive shaft? Any help would be great.

what about the front diff? Cant just leave it there, technically you would need spindles and hubs, Plus the computer is gonna go nuts looking for the transfer case

Could leave front diff and let it spin, no biggie. Just take front driveshaft off.

If you removed front diff you could just install the front outer axle ends to hold the wheel bearing together, or just get 2wd spindles.

No deal on trans or anything yet. I want it 2wd I'm getting rid of the torsion bar front end making it to a coil spring front end. Truck is going to be turboed hopefully and I'm not building the awd setup. So I'm not worried about the computer either.

I bet you'll need to replace the 10 bolt in the back too in order to hold up to a turbo 6.0. +1 to whoever said you can use just the outer CV joints. That is how we test wheel bearings that need the CVJ at work. We actually cut the entire cup off where the ball/ cage/ raceways are and just use the the splines obviously and about 1/2" to 1" off the cup part.

My suggestion would be installing a 4l80e trans..... either that or a 6l80e for the two wheel swap. The 6l80-90e trans will handle the turbo without modifications, the 4l80 most likely will not.
Its a lot of work your proposing.... a heavy vehicle... and your wanting to make it pull hard.
Soon as you get enough power you will experience traction problems, rear axle durability.
Dont get me wrong, sounds like fun. My suggestion would be leave it awd.

Sell it and buy a 2WD Tahoe of Yukon.
Wish it was that easy. I just had the truck custom painted flat pearl white. Then if I sold it I would have to find a 6 liter to put in a 2wd truck. Only took me a day I have the front suspension out front and rear diff and the trans. It wasn't that big or a deal.image.jpeg

you just need 2wd Hubs rest is the same also witht he diff out pulling oil pan is easier
Yeah I see I need those. But I pulled the torsion bar setup out also so I have to get the lower control arms, springs and the upper spring cups and weld them in.

Umm you think the 6l80e is stronger then the 4l80e? Good luck to get that shifting right....

Go 4l80E all the way. It'll handle it, coupled with a nice 2800-3200 locking stall the truck will be a hoot to drive.

dude rich is the king of transmissions im sure he knows what hes talking about

I don't think, I know from direct experience rebuilding both for performance applications..... yes, the 6l80/90 stock can handle 700 to the tire with just a tune.
Even I'm impressed.

I always wondered how stout the 6l80/90s were. Pretty amazing considering (1) it shifts like complete garbage in stock form and (2) its a transmission from GM

Humm good to know. My buddy's 800whp g8 blew the stock one quick. The performance re-build holds it, but still shifts like trash. I had a built 4l80 behind a nitrous 454lsx and it was great.

How would he get the ecu to command shifting via the 6 speed? Can you get a newer ecu and repin the harness?
