Do I have to remove the plenum? I don't see how to get at them if I don't. Do I have to remove the plastic at the base of the windshield (and wipers) to remove the plenum?? It's a 2001 Taurus btw.

if the coil pack is on the back, just remove the pass side wiper cowl(IIRC, the wiper arms can be left in place, and now is the time to inspect/replace the cabin air filter), and the bottom piece of it(screws are obvious once the top is removed), then you can get the coil out of the way and the plugs out, several extensions inserted one at a time may come in handy

Thanks for the info. I've been looking in this huge service manual from the library but it didn't say anything about getting at the spark plug. I'll give it a try.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding We have a winner!

Things went just as you described, slow at times as I first dropped the deep well socket in, then the extension, in order to clear the plenum. I blew out the plugs tubes before removing them using the same section of hose that I slipped over the plugs to unscrew them and start them on their way back in.

With over 100K miles on them the plugs and cabin air filter were toast , so I'll have to get that filter next time I'm out somewhere.

THANKS DAVE !
