Cash for Clunkers...

in my opinion the way that they are doing it is rather backwards... why take the running cars off of the road instead of getting the junk that is sitting in the streets and people back yards and scrapping thing...

not everyone can afford a new car so lets take all of the running affordable cars and scrap them and leave the poor people with the junk in their yards they cant fix

the whole reason for C4C was to get rid of the gas guzzlers, not give people affordable cars. they wanted the cheap transportation off the road. a truck in the weeds behind your house doesnt use up much fuel.

and the gov helps people how... they dont... now that they own gm and chrysler they want to sell more cars and make more money off of us

I think if they were really looking to make money, they would have restricted the C4C program to apply to only the Big 3.

that would look obvious wouldnt it

Sure it would.

But just because you put a knife in a plastic Meijer bag doesn't make it hurt any less. This is a program full of fail, and I think it's a way to get back at the oil tycoons (i.e. Bush and cronies) and foster the spending of more money we don't have.

According to Debbie Stebenow, the main reason was to stimulate new car sales and get 'gas guzzlers' off the road.

Quote from her office's email reply to me:

This legislation can provide the kind of immediate result that we need in America to help Main Street; to keep people working and lend a hand to Americans trying to make ends meet. At the same time, we will remove older vehicles from our roads, replace them with more fuel-efficient models and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. Other countries are already seeing the benefits of implementing cash for clunkers programs, with some countries seeing an increase in auto sales by 20%.
Yep, let's sell a few thousand cars and put thousands of Americans deeper into debt. Perfect solution.

heres an LT1 that fell victim. i know someone thats turning in a nice Z28 too

wow i cant believe that jeep blew up so easy, those 4.0s are generally bulletproof.

My brother went through 2, 1 of which were his fault, and the 3rd one right now that he's barely put probably 7-8k on only rarely driven have engine noise. :shake: This is the worst engine from personal experience, how come everyone else loves em?

what exactly are they doing to make these motors blow so fast? even running them with no oil shouldn't pop them that fast i wouldn't think. what is the solution that they put in the engine before they floor it till it pops?

i owned a '98 cherokee 4.0 for around 6 years and it was great! i maintained it good and beat on it every now and then racing ricers. only thing i ever had to fix besides reg maintainence was a radiator and waterpump when it was at 125k miles

How To Use Sodium Silicate
Engine Disablement Procedures for the CARS Program

Taken from Page 127 in the NHTSA Final Rule

THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT TO BE USED BY THE VEHICLE OWNER

THESE STEPS ARE FOR PARTICPATING CARS DEALERS ONLY

Perform the following procedure to disable the vehicle engine.

1. Obtain solution of 40% sodium silicate/60% water. (The Sodium Silicate (SiO2/Na2O) must have a weight ratio of 3.0 or greater.)

2. Drain engine oil for environmentally appropriate disposal.

3. Install the oil drain plug.

4. Since the procedure is intended to render the engine inoperative, drive or move the vehicle to the desired area for disablement.

5. Pour enough solution in the engine through the oil fill for the oil pump to circulate the solution throughout the engine. Start by adding 2 quarts of the solution, which should be sufficient in most cases.

CAUTION: Wear goggles and gloves. Appropriate protective clothing should be worn to prevent silicate solution from coming into contact with the skin.

6. Replace the oil fill cap.

7. Start the engine.

8. Run engine at approximately 2000 rpm (for safety reasons do not operate at high rpm) until the engine stops. (Typically the engine will operate for 3 to 7 minutes. As the solution starts to affect engine operation, the operator will have to apply more throttle to keep the engine at 2000 rpm.)

9. Allow the engine to cool for at least 1 hour.

10. With the battery at full charge or with auxiliary power to provide the power of a fully charged battery, attempt to start the engine.

11. If the engine will not operate at idle, the procedure is complete.

12. If the engine will operate at idle, repeat steps 7 through 11 until the engine will no longer idle.

13. Attach a label to the engine that legibly states the following:

This engine is from a vehicle that is part of the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). It has significant internal damage caused by operating the engine with a sodium silicate solution (liquid glass) instead of oil.
14. File this document in the file for the new vehicle purchase.

well I just found out that my grandpa's old pickup (82 3/4 ton chevy with all the HD stuff in great shape; my dream truck since 5) is going to get crushed in this. I was going to get this truck to restore when the guy was done with it before this thing.

FML.
