car buying question

I'm an Ohio resident. I'm looking at a Jeep in Michigan tomorrow. If I end up buying it and their BMV is closed for the weekend, how do I get it home without temp tags? Can I drive it without plates if I have the signed title with me? Should I ask the old owner to leave his plates on it for me?

You can drive it if you want
If a cop pulls you over you can tell him you are "in transit"
Which is legal.

I think you can get temp tags from Ohio in case you do buy it. My friend was from Massachussetts and bough a car in MI. Had temp tags from MA and drove it back to MA from MI. He went through Canada too.

I bought My Camaro in PA and drove it back here to MI with nbo plate

I got pulled over 3 times and said I was in transit, I showed the cop the Insurance, title, and bill of sale and they were cool....

Just as long as the title is signed and dated you can transport the car from where you bought it to your home, only.

The important thing is that you have the vehicle insured before you transport it.

My advise would be to arrive early enough where you'll have time to get the paperwork taken care of at the Secretary of State, his bank (if necessary), and your insurance company (which is just a phone call).

If you aren't familiar with the area just let us know and we'll find the nearest Secretary of State office for you.

Why would he need to do anything at the Michigan Secretary of State? They give you 72 hours or whatever to get the car home. Maybe he would need to get something in Ohio beforehand though. As far as insurance goes, call them and tell them you might be buying a car and see what they say. I don't think you should really need to do anything extra there either, you'll just need proof of insurance for one of your other cars I believe but your insurance man can tell you for sure.

Sometimes cops can be dicks, but if you have all three you should be set. Good luck

Do not use the seller's license plate on the vehicle to drive it home. By law, the purchaser may drive the vehicle to the first place of storage (usually home) without a registration within three days of the sale. The new owner must carry the properly assigned title and use the most direct route. Contact your insurance company to be sure you are covered.

So you are good until you get to the Ohio border. If their laws require you to have something you'll have to get it before hand. That's the thing about buying a car, all states have different laws
