C4 trans problems

My brother has a '68 c4 with the 24 spline and its a case fill. I traded him my old converter for some parts and yesterday we made an attempt to drop his Engine in but when I went to put the converter on it would only click on twice  After many attempts of turing and lifting on the hub! nothing happened... It just would not go in any further, so we get the same converter that came off the trans and now that will not lock in. Anyone have a clue as to what the problem? Thanks.

Alot of time converters are fickle about engaging the pump bushing and gear tabs. Try lubbing it up with some vasaline or pretoleum jelly and try again. I still think the input shaft may have pulled out of the drum a touch and thats cuasing your problem. If you turn it do you have resistance or does it freewheel easily ?

I think so, it has very little movement in and out.

It free wheels easy, no resistance at all.

Sounds like the input shaft is not engaged. IIRC the c4 input shaft can be pulled in and out easily. I would try to get it seated back into the input drum and try the conter install again.
