Buying a car without a title

Without a title how can you tell its' not stolen? Would you want to take that risk? I know I wouldn't. And i wonder what is the reasoning behind why there is no title?

not sure.. i got a '85 gt from a guy and its been a few months.. and he still hasnt gave me the title... i talked to secretary of state and i guess now a days its pretty hard to claim for a lost title..

I have the registration for it with his name on it. I called the toff free secretary of state number and the guy was a prick. He first told me that I am stupid for buying a car without getting a title and I am shit out of luck. The he says that the Secretary of State branch "might" have me fill out some form if they feel like dealing with me.

I get better customer service at Taco Bell.

Well he was right about buying a car without a title. It's a pain in the ass. And if the guy you bought it off of is a jerk, it's still his car. You should have had him get the title before you paid him.

I lost the title to a car I just sold. I never did the title work when I bought it
7 years ago. They just had me fill out an affidavit stating what I paid for the car, the vin, etc. I couldn't even tell them the previous owner's name or address. I paid a small fee, they did a title search thru MSP, and a week later I had a new title. Quite painless really.

Best bet is to get the current owner to file for a lost title. I know there is a s.o.s. office in Ann Arbor or Ypsi that does it the same day. I believe if you go with the owner you can get it put in your name right on the spot too.

But, if you can't do that and if it is not stolen it is a pain. You have to get the police involved and fill out a form. The form is called a TR and then a number, I forget what it is. You fill out the form then have the police fill out their portion, it goes to the sec. of state and when it clears you get a title. My buddy has done it before and I have to for a car I have.

Go to the SOS and ask for a green sheet police Vin inspection I think it's a TR54. Then have the police do a Vin inspection on it then take the green sheet to the SOS and apply for title.

go to sec of state tell them u bought the car and lost the title they will give u a paper 2 fil out the submit it 2 lansing if its not stolen they will put the car in your name and mail u a title in a week or so. i did it last summer with my white monte ss aerocoupe that i paid 250 dollars for.lol my buddy has done it about 3 times as well

Thanks for all the input. I was worried that I was going to run into problems getting it situated.

You still might, the state has changed the laws concerning transfering non titled cars. Do you have a bill of sale from the previous owner, that will help.

I've bought a couple of older cars from non-title states (AL and NY). As long as I had a registration and the states special sale affidavit, it wasn't a problem at all to get the Michigan title...The registration didn't need to be current, either. The 1967 Comet I now have didn't have a title when I bought it.

The last time I did it was about 4 years ago....

They don't give those out anymore unless you know someone at the SOS and they give it to you.

Take the vin and go to the SOS say exactly what your doing you want to buy a car but has no tittle. You want to check for possible leans on it or if its in any datbase for being stolen if it comes back clean buy it.

GEt a written bill of sale from the seller, ask sos who the car is tittled under, they give you a name and address.. Go visit this person get them to sign off on the car to you then all you do is appply for a lost tittle under your name.

Great. I do have a bill of sale, along with the registration from the previous owner.
It is an older Jeep Wrangler BTW.

If for some reason the previous owner will not answer your calls or the door. You have to make three attempts and leave a written letter in there mail box stating what your attempting to do. If they make no attempt to contact you. Go back to the SOS tell them this tell them you left a letter at the residence with no reply. They will then attpent to contact the as tittled owner, If there attempts fail as well after two weeks they will give you a tittle in your name.

Its been a lil over a year since I've done this so i could be a lil off but most should be correct.
