hey guys, i live in tn and i am buying a used car in ohio from a private seller. what do i need to have to drive it straight home to tn? i am going to register and get plates for it in tn. i will have a bill of sale and a signed off title and my understanding is that my regular auto insurance carrier has to insure it for 72 hrs. i was planning on just taking off with no plates and hoping if i get pulled over i would show the receipt and signed off title and be ok. please state facts only. thanks in advance, roger

I wish I could give you some help but I am curious about the exact same thing. Is it rite that if you buy out of state, you do not have to pay sales tax when you register it?

At a minimum I would call your insurance company. With only the VIN# you can get insurance, they can email proof of insurance in case your pulled over. I wouldn't take a chance based on your understanding that your insured. Better to find out before an be covered that find out after and it's to late.

I just sold a bike to a guy from OH, he rode it home. From my house he went to Michigan's Secretary of State and picked up a temporary plate (good for 30 days). I asked why he didn't just drive it home without a plate. He said the temp plate bought him 30 days before he had to register it in OH. So he didn't have to pay the tax's on it right away.

Check with OH DMV or whatever they have. OH cops are pricks.

Go transfer or open a new policy for the new purchase, get a bill of sale from owner signed and dated with time, and then retain all the paper work on the driver of the new vehicle. You may get pulled over for no plates, but you'll be fine. Going to the ohio DMV before you drive home would be the best case assuming you'll have the vehicle insured prior.

For TN, consult your state's DMV website and look under the "vehicle title & registration" section:

http://www.tn.gov/revenue/vehicle/

Or, if the answer can't be located there, try contacting them or even consult the TN Highway Patrol:
