Buying a 4k tv

We've had a 55" Vizio 1080P, LED, for 2 yrs now, it's been great except for a couple "lock ups" when starting netflix and I have to unplug it and it works fine after that, maybe 2x a year it's done that.

Wife say's picture is not as good as prior Panasonic Plasma 50" 1080P, but I can't tell the difference, I'm happy with it.

Remote does has to be pointed right at the TV, seems to be a common complaint with them.

I don't care what anyone thinks, the curve is sweet. And idk my dads plasma is the same rating and he has HD Comcast and I have HD direc TV and he even said my picture quality is better. Maybe it's just the provider, but the curve is just sweet looking.

LG has s OLED curve TV but it's double if not triple the price but it is only 1/2-3/4" thick and appears to be all Glass. Thing was so sick!

Yea. I could get the 65 in LG OLED 4k tv but it's 10k. I'm capping my splurge at 6k.

Oled tvs are kinda boss... they have a few issues with longevity but they can shut off individual pixels tonmake black.

My parents have a 4k tv and just watching bluray stuff im not really impressed. It is still back or side lit and it still struggles to make black and not dark blue.

I have a plasma and love it, i did have to get blackbout curtains for my living room because of window and tv position. If you have a lit room, lcd and led aee your options. If your room is dark id say plasma or projector.

If you are gonna build a theater id save money on this tv get something ok amd spend the money on good sound stuff and a nice projector.

Especially at his budget. He can include a very nice audio system within that budget. I cry when I see a "home theater" consisting of a nice TV and a crap audio system. It isn't home theater, it's a pretty picture with noise from a bunch of speakers.

I'd go this route if I were shopping.

That's a killer setup for $4400 total.

These are what I have now for the system.

4 of these for satellites: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107TSI400B/Polk-Audio-TSi400-Black.html?cc=07 (not exact model, mine are about 4 years old)

Decent Yamaha receiver. Don't remember the exact model, but paid around a grand for it 4 years ago.

The problem that I have with my setup is the space it's in. Very large open space. 20 foot ceilings and the room is about 25x25. This is a rental, so again, I'm not going to worry about the setup matching this room. When we move, this will likely go in the living room and I'll have a custom setup in the basement including a projector/theater setup.

at the moment though, I'm probably going to just hold out and see what kind of sales come down the pike. I don't have to buy anything today, just wanted to but I'm not going to just throw 6k away because I want something new.

Good idea. Besides, 4K stuff will come down in price the next year or two, not to mention there isn't much in the way of 4k content out there.

I've had a 60" Vizio LCD/LED smart Tv for 3 years. Been flawless, great picture IMO. I wouldnt hesitate to buy that 70" Vizio 4k TV. You will save yourself 4,000 bucks and when you get your new house you can upgrade to something bigger or more expensive if you end up liking it

Don't forget that proper calibration will do wonders for picture quality. Don't be fooled by the jacked up brightness at the stores. I had my stuff calibrated by certified ISF calibrator technician. Picture is much improved. Worth the investment.

On all my TV's I've bought the calibration to go along with it. When they came and did my 55 in they actually found I had a bad MoBo. Would have never found that out if I hadn't bought that. I also like that they will take a lot of the power management crap out of it.

Lots of factors make a picture look good and bad.

How I feel about 4k goes like this... 4 times the resolution than 1080p has the debate of how close you have to be to the set to see a difference, things like that.

You can see the difference in refresh rates, contrast ratios, and levels of black and light performance.

A friend of mine has a 720p/1080i tv that blows my mind how good it looks.
