DAVOS, Switzerland (CNN) -- Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates
announced a new direction Friday as he pledged $306 million in grants to develop farming in poor countries, leading the charge for corporate responsibility at a major meeting of business chiefs.

Bill Gates, Bono and Michael Dell from Dell computers.

The announcement by Gates, who is to step down from the computer giant later this year, drew attention from the financial woes that have dominated the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Gates received a standing ovation for his announcement at the suggestion of U2 frontman Bono.

The move, the first foray into agriculture by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will help boost efforts by the annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland to shake off its image as a billionaire's talking shop that does little to solve the problems it discusses.

"If we are serious about ending extreme hunger and poverty around the world, we must be serious about transforming agriculture for small farmers, most of whom are women," Gates said. See Bill Gates talk about spreading the wealth. »

"The challenge here is to design a system including profit and recognition to do more for the poor," he said, calling for a new form of "creative capitalism."

Bono, returning to add showbiz sparkle to the Forum for a second year, and UN chief Ban Ki-moon pushed the debate towards issues such as malaria eradication, poverty alleviation and climate change.

In his first appearance at Davos 2008, which gathers more than 2,500 world business figures and government leaders, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for the World Bank to take on an environmental role to fight climate change.

Despite the fresh financial shockwaves generated by the $7.2 billion fraud at French bank Societe Generale, there were easing concerns that the global economy was heading towards recession.

A CNN straw poll of business leaders attending the Davos meeting voted in favor of an economic slowdown.See CNN's Recession-o-meter

John Thaine, CEO of Merrill Lynch told CNN that he believed the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to 0.75 rate cut would help avoid long-term turmoil. See Thain talk about economy »

"I think that the steps that the Fed is taking, the steps that the administration is taking, are the right steps, they will help, but the economy is still going to slow," he told CNN. E-mail to a friend

Thats what I was thinking, wouldnt it be easier to fix your own house before worrying about someone elses?

perhaps he thinks that people in america have the general ability to make themselves successful, whereas people in these remote areas cannot.

I can't believe you guys are whining about healthcare. Those people are STARVING! They don't have FOOD!

Quite a bit more of an issue than being forced to pay your own medical bills

Tell that to the people that were through the depression, countless wars and economic hardhips and built this country-- Those are the ones we piss on nowadays. I say help those starving people AFTER we take care of our own.

Yeah they're really getting pissed on. What planet are you on???

Are you seriously criticizing a man for single handedly trying to help people from starving to death, simply because we have expensive health care??

You must be outside your fucking mind.

And although I don't even think it's relevant, I haven't found health care to be so bad anyhow.

He is VERY generous.

Also, he is the master of keeping his family out of the public eye.

WHAT?? Ummm, Ok, but back here on earth in the US we are having a huge problem with an aging population and access to healthcare. This completely doesn't touch on the younger population and their problems with public health. Our healthcare system is FAILING, bro. This is COMMON KNOWLEDGE.

Granted, I am no genius.....but last time I checked, expensive health care for old people wasn't quite as big of a problem as entire regions of people, including children, STARVING because there is NO FOOD.

Are you trying to be serious here, or are you just arguing to save face because you posted something stupid?

Two thumbs up for Bill Gates.

You're kind of a volatile guy, aren't you? I think it's great that he's being charitable, no argument there. I also am very sorry for those folks there that are starving. I just think that charity should start at home, and that a gift like that would be better received by the people who made him rich in the first place-- namely the americans. We have homeless and starving people here too Guy, but it seems that a little gratitude towards those who gift to people like Bill, you, me and the rest would be a little more appropriate.

Maybe once we solve the rest of the world's problems we could take a look within and start fixing the mess we have here. Order up.

I am sometimes argumentative, but most of the time it's when somebody posts something extremely stupid.

I'm having a hard time understanding how someone can compare the "mess" we have here to the tragedy that is happening in other places. To compare expensive healthcare to extreme hunger is pretty irrational.

If you read about what he's doing, he's not just buying a man a fish; he's teaching him how to fish.

And BTW, Gates made *himself* rich.

Whatever. In the meantime we still desperately need funding here in the US for stem cell research, housing the homeless, feeding our own people, disease prevention, and on and on. How you can NOT see this amazes me. Do you not keep up on what's happening around you? Argumentative is one thing, but your assertions that my opinons are "stupid" reflect your own inability to comprehend my points. Your point is taken, those people are poor, hungry and in need of help, just like people here.

Bill Gates made his real wealth in Microsoft from a stolen idea from Apple and sold it to the people. Call that what you will, but I'd venture to say that most of the Windows software purchases initially came from Americans.

Feel free to curb your diarrhea of the mouth. And where can one buy such arrogance that you can deem my opinions 'stupid?' Try less insults in your arguments, you may start to lend some credibility someday, Sunshine.

An idea stolen from Apple...lol. No, sorry, but that's not the case. It's irrelevant anyhow, and I don't care to argue with you about it.

I do still maintain that your post is stupid. This is a great thing being done by someone who can actually make a difference, and all you can do is criticize it and bring up an issue which is trivial in comparison to the one is he attempting to solve.

I believe the point he is making is that hungry is hungry and homeless is homeless regardless of what country it is. He is american and has made the bulk of his fortune here, so why wouldnt you help the homeless and hungry here before anywhere else.
