Big Block Small Block

I really don't wanna sound like a retard posting this but, How can you tell a big block from a small block. The reason for asking this is because I was reading a magazine today and I saw a 572 small block and I always thought that big blocks where measure in CI and everything over a 383 was a big block.

CI is hardly a indicator of engine family these days. Which engines in particular are you trying to identify.

All I want to know is how can I Identify the engines. Say like I saw a 350, how could I tell which is a small block or a big block. Or even a Cleveland or a Windsor.

The difference is in the block itself, not the CI. chevy for example. Theres a small block casting (shorter deck height and close bore centers) and a big block (taller deck spacing and longer bore spacing. From the factory you could get a 400ci small block and a 396 big block. On a small chevy, the two center exhuast ports are right next to each other, on a big block chevy all four per side are equally spaced

I know some stuff. I have been going to school now for about 6months for cars. I am hopefully about to be state certified in steering and suspension here in a few weeks.

chevy big and small block is fiarly easy to distinguish with stock type parts but overall size is usually the give away. SBC eahuxt port give it away. the 2 center exhuast post are simesed together. on a BBC the exhuast port are equally spaced.

as to the ford stuff. there are a bunch of engine familys with some falling in between sb and bb. Its is kind of complicated.

chryslers are easy. SB distributor in the back, bb distributor in the front. Hemi well its fucking ginormus and the spark plugs are in the center of the valve cover.
