I just bought a 1980 Ford F-150 Custom 2wd P/U it has the 351M engine in it with 89,000 miles. the guy I got it from said that it backfired real bad and just quit running. I got the truck home ripped the heads off of it and found a bent #7 exhaust pushrod. after inspecting the heads there is also a bent #7valve. What could cause this? and could there be more damage internally? I drained the oil there seems to be no shrapnel or any metal shavings in oil. I also checked timing it didn't jump timing.

89,000 miles on it. I was thinking about checking out the bearings but from the looks of the inside of the engine it has been well taken care of, there is no sludge build up at all. I didn't want to tear to far into it unless its needed. I just need a decent tow rig to get my car back and forth on track day. So I'm thinking cheap fix if possible..

No this thing is stock I got it from the original owner. Nothing has ever been done to it besides a timing chain and water pump.

I don't know how much running clearance these engines may or may not have but I would check the Timming chain to make sure it is properly indexed and the correct chain.

I pulled the engine and am dropping one of the 460's I have laying around into it. It seems the 351M and 460 have the same tranny bolt pattern and are direct bolt up's. The 351M is slowly making it's way to the scrap pile....
