I found out a fireman friend of mine passed away in a building collapse on Sunday in NY city. Good guy, married with a wife & 2 kids 14 and 11. I met Howie a few years back playing in softball tournaments and always thought he was a real stand-up guy. He and a probie perished in the fire when the roof collapsed with an air conditioner on top of it. I'm a little bummed out that I won't get to see him at the next tourney.

Man, sorry to hear, I know all those stories you were telling at Al's party, I enjoyed them. This is one of the stories you dont want to hear tho. Sorry to hear that. Thanks for what you do man, alot of us appreciate it! :bigthumb:

bad day

Thanks alot for the nice repies, it means alot. That is the biggest fear I have is a chief driving to my house to tell my wife & kids that I'm not comming home.:(

That sucks to hear. I'm sure he died doing what he loved to do, though. It's too bad that won't be able to be said about all of us. I respect fireman, policeman, military personnel and all similar jobs. You guys put your life on the line for us every day at work and don't even make that great of pay for the risk you take. I'm glad there are people like you (and your buddy that gave his life for others) in the world.

bad day

Thanks again guys...I might be heading to NY next week. My other buddies that work with him are taking it really hard. NY has had too many LODD's (line of duty death) including 9/11, in the past 5 years. It makes me sad to think about his wife & kids, but knowing those guys, they will take care of his family the best they can.

First off....May your buddy RIP. Second, do firefighters have a similar group like us police officers have that will take care of your family if something happens to you in the line of duty? There is a group here in Michigan called MICOPS...Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors, if you are injured/killed in the line of duty, MICOPS will step in and provide your family with financial/emotional support and make sure that your kids go to college and what not....Just curious if the firefighters have something similar for supporting families that lose a loved one in the line of duty....

Most states have a survivor benefit for the family, I think it's a lump sum of money like $250k. In Detroit, we have the fireman's fund, that makes the funeral arrangements, and provides both emotional & financial support. I'm not sure what they have in NY, but it's probably similar. Thanks for the thoughts...

In times like this, just recognize that you not only have your "brothers" in the firehouse to lean on, but your "cousins" in the police business feel your pain as well. All of us "public servants" are a HUGE family! If you need anything, even though I've never met you, I'd be willing to just meet up for a beer or something to get your mind off of things! What station do you work at in Detroit??? I work right downtown.
