backfiring through the TBI

I just bought a '90 GMC 1500 with a 350 TBI in it. It runs pretty good except when I'm accelerating in 4th gear ( sometimes 3rd too ). It starts backfiring through the throttle body. Is this a timing issue? To retarded? To advanced? Something else?

I have seen the pick-up reluctors come loose, and it makes them do all sorts of shit
