Babcock signs with Toronto Maple Leafs

That really is a crazy amount of money for an NHL coach. $6.25/year. The highest paid now is Joel Quenneville at $2.75 mil a year.

I get it's about the money.. But it annoys me that it's about the money. When u see guys like Mickey Redmond/Chris Osgood etc. hang around after spending time here and someone "represents" an awesome organization then bails out for more money it's really hard to stomach.

I hear ya, but aside from the money, much of this had to do with Holland not giving Babs any say so in who to draft or trade. One of his big concerns was with Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Kronwall aging and not having anybody to fill their shoes any time soon. Shanahan is pretty much giving Babs free reign in Toronto, so he will be able to have much more input on which players to acquire. He will be more like Pat Riley in a sense in that he will also take on some GM duties as well as head coach.

We are gonna bring up the griffins coach and be a new team. You gotta think about it like that, he has been with the core of our team through their development.

exactly Jeff Blashill is a great coach too. The wings are a great hockey club with a bunch of guys like tatar and nyquist making league minimum wages and really driving the team forward. The red wings will be a force for years to come. They need to unload some high paid anchors like jimmy howard and franzen who are not performing when they need them most.

Babs has a rough road ahead in toronto. If anyone can turn them around he can but its not gonna be easy. He is from that neck of the woods so hopefully he can spend more time with his family.

He gets paid in USD... Let's be real... They will find every loop hole there is to make sure he gets every penny possible...

I think he will be missed but I also think that the Wings are self sufficent when they want to be. Babcock had a great team and he is a great coach but couldnt pull the team together to win the cup, that might have been the driving factor. The cash was probably the "push" to go elsewhere.

Hopefully we see a stronger 2015/2016 Red Wings team with less injuries and more cohesion.

Ten years is a very long time as head coach of the same team.
I'm sure he was ready to move on to a new challenge given the Wings have been in a slump since 2008.
I wish Babs well in his new challenge as Toronto's coach. He's got his work cut out for him.
If someone offered me two or three times my current salary to do my same job in Toronto my bags would be packed by the end of the day. Can't fault the guy for being a capitalist.

Canada's tax is 50% at this level.

So was it really about the money?

Got a cousin in Toronto and he says as shitty as the Maple Leafs are, they sell out every game and seats are $$$! They would of paid Babcock what ever he wanted.
He showed me one of his paychecks and makes $2k a week working in the post office... his take home after taxes and union fee's is $717!:jawdrop2:
Housing prices are outrageous... Cant touch anything decent for less then $700,000! He's got $300k to put down on a house and still cant afford a home in the city!
Babcocks gotta spend a years salary just on a house! and 50% tax on his salary? comes out to the same price as if he'd stayed in Detroit.... At least he would of had a chance at the Stanly Cup!
