Automobile mag: Zl1 vs. GT500

Halfway decent article, but damn is that guy a little over exxagerant? The clumsy, dogshit shiftered, model T framed, GT500 was only 0.7% slower than the superbly refined magneto shocked sportscar from the moon?

I give the GM team plenty of props for getting that thing to handle as well as it does to make up for the lack of power...too bad its still ugly

Lack of power? 580? Bitter much?

Let me spell this out again for people who missed it: Lighter car with more horsepower wins 1/4 race, no big deal. Heavier car with 80 less horsepower wins road course? bigger deal.

p.s. DBK - Where is my Ring time? You ready to settle our bet yet? All you have to do is admit the GT500 can't beat the ZL1 at the Ring.

There can be all the excuses in the world for either side (as I'm sure there will be), but it shows what most rational minded individuals expected... as will the drag test coming out with the usual .3 sec advantage to the GT. It is what it is, different cars with different talents that can run down $200,000+ cars but still retain a warranty and a backseat. I want them to throw the M5 into the mix just for fun.

.7 plus the time lost with the bad shifts. By the writers estimate, the Camaro with a clean run would have been 1.2 seconds faster.

That said, I still like the looks of the 500 better.

As long as the 500 smacks the ZL1 in the 1320 I'm happy. I don't like turning and braking all the time. I prefer to brake once as I turn on to the return road :)

I was at Milan when these guys were there running these 2 cars. The GT 500 spanked the Camaro every time. I talked to both of the guys from the magazine. They praised the GT 500 in many aspects. They loved the launch control in the GT. They were at Gingerman doing the road course last Tuesday and Milan on Wednesday. I don't care which car wins what. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I prefer the GT 500.

The insideline article was opposite - they said the GT500s shifter was bad and the Camaro was great. I guess it depends who is driving. I assume a road course result depends on the course. A course with less turns and more straight aways would help the GT500. I work for Ford so I am biased toward the GT500 (and I do not run road courses) but I am glad to see the battle back and better than ever.

Manual transmission evaluations are always all over the map. Everyone wants something different. I don't envy manual trans development engineers at all. they are always getting yelled at by someone because their stuff is the worst shit ever while someone else is telling them don't change a thing, this is the best manual i've ever driven. The feedback they get really is that ridiculously extreme.

I wish they would bring something that shifted exactly like a 93 Mustang T-5 trans, but would live behind 3x the power that box did. What a beautiful trans to drive, but a shitty trans to replace all the time.

I drove a regular manual 2012 camaro SS just the other day, I thought it shifted nicely. But it was my first time driving a manual. Obviously the ZL1 will be a bit different. I drove a CTSV just the other week, and it's a blast. That much power with a warrenty is nice. I got a tour of the wixom plant where they build the engines for the Vette's, but I guess they don't hand build the CTS-V and ZL1 engines there.
