AutoLavish goes to Puerto Rico: Intro!

A few months ago we were able to schedule a small “Puerto Rico Tour” for December. We had various clients that expressed interest in our services, and after they put down deposits, things were set to go.

We left out of Detroit Metro Airport when the temperature was a chilly 27 degrees, stopped in Fort Lauderdale, then hopped aboard a flight for San Juan, PR where the temperature was 84 and humid. BIG difference.

First thing was first: pick up the rental. We got a pretty good deal and got a 2009 Dodge Caravan with a mere 10 miles on it. As a bonus, Jacob helped to design/develop a few things on this vehicle pre-production a couple of years back, so he knew it inside and out.

Next stop: Pick up our gear / supplies. In route to pick up items we had already shipped out, we made a couple of stops. As beautiful as Puerto Rico is, we just weren’t ready to handle all the sun and heat. The few months leading to Winter in Detroit left Jacob and I quite pale. We stopped and picked up a couple of hats and had them custom embroidered. In addition to the caps, I got a pair of sunglasses to work in as Jacob already had some polarized shades.

I’m loving the glasses, but felt naked wearing them without protection. Wolfgang Fuzion came to my rescue. I applied it by hand to insure full coverage.

Wax setting:

Wax buffed off with a plush microfiber cloth, they now looked and felt proper.

We got the Dodge loaded up with all of our goodies and headed to the next necessity: the car wash. You can’t be a Professional Detailer with a hit-up vehicle. We had to get things right.

APC’ed the wheels / wheel wells / lowers, washed with Gold Class

Danase Paint Sealant applied by hand to the body (our spray sealants/quick detailers hadn’t come in yet :( ), wheel wells treated with Meguiar’s All-Season Dressing, Meguiar’s Foaming Tire Shine on the tires

Stay tuned!

I dont know if I should give you +1 or -1 for detailing a rental...van :)
looks like you guys had a nice time. waiting for more pics.

How hard was it to get all your cleaning supplies through customs? seems like itd be a royal hassle

ok, well how about just on the plane? i thought there were limits on liquids

The only limits are for carry-on (3oz. IIRC). If you check your luggage, then you can take pretty much any amount of liquid. There are restrictions on dangerous chemicals (flammable/explosive/corrosive/etc.), but nothing that would cause any hassles for car care stuff.

I hope thats a good Eek face not a bad one...

very nice guys.

Thanks and more to come soon.

you detailed a rental car?

We sure did. It didn't need much and we didn't want to do much to it, but we were going to have it for about two weeks which means we wanted it to be good to go.

I love Puerto Rico.

Was my first time there and I enjoyed it a lot

Yes in deed

As pointed out already - its part of the US though you have to go through a Department of Agriculture screening prior to coming back.

I love how you detailed the rental.
Nick

Nick - you know we gotta look clean 8)

Puerto Rico is part of the US. You don't go through customs.

Bingo!

We ordered over $800 worth of supplies and had it sent straight there, then we brought everything else we needed. The goal was to insure we'd cut even on this trip (we left A LOT of supplies down in PR for future visits), which we did and then some. We'll hopefully be going back within the next few months to work for some new clients and to check up on some ones we worked on this last time. Hopefully this time we'll only have to pack up 4 or 5 buffers and some other items so it won't be as much of a hassle.

shades looked much better with the wax :D

:nayner: thanks! They felt better and beaded water nicely too ;)

Am I missing something? You guys were flown out to detail some cars?

Correct - so I suppose you aren't missing anything.

Awesome, can't wait for the pics.

I'll try to post one of 'em tomorrow. Likely will start with the beautiful RUF RTurbo

I like how you guys called it "the tour". Awesome.

It was a pretty good time though there were lots of long days. Its hard to suddenly be working in temps of 94 degrees (and super humid) - really a drain on the body and I had to keep drinking a ton of water.
Thanks for taking a look!

can I be a roadie on your next tour?

Its such a beautiful place I'd love to take a bunch of people if I could, not to mention we got to see A LOT of the island. We picked up the rental with 10 miles on it - it was returned with over 2,000
