Auto loan argument (Long)

Having this argument with a friend:

So let’s say you are in a position where you have two car leases due up at the same time (one in the wife’s name and one in yours) and you are looking to get into two new vehicles. Problem is this time the wife no longer has a job so the chances are slim that any one financial institution will give you (2) car loans given the times. Credit rating is still platinum. You’ve NEVER missed or even been late on a (any) payment. But down one income, the debt-to-income ratio is pretty high. You don’t have a ton of cash to put down but you do have some. Let’s also say you know you can afford the payments of the vehicles you have pre-selected (though the banks may not see it that way). Let’s also say that you want to do a low mile lease on one vehicle because the wife doesn’t drive much except taking the kids to school and you want to purchase/buy the other vehicle.

Now obviously there are a lot of things to consider and the dealership/salesperson has no say-so as to whether you get approved for a loan or not, but to simplify it, let’s make this the question(s):

Would there be a better chance of you getting approved for two vehicles at the same time if you were to go into a dealership, explain the situation straight up and tell the salesperson “Hey, I wanna drive home with two cars today. Help me make it happen!”?
(In other words, would a salesperson work harder to try to find different ways to obtain financing knowing he/she was going to get commission on two sales)

- OR -

Would you have a better chance going to one dealership in the morning and getting a vehicle then on the SAME DAY go to another dealership (different manufacturer / different financing institution) and try to get financing on a second vehicle?
(In other words hope that the fact that you just got a loan earlier that day and it wouldn’t be entered into “The System” and count against you on the second loan you were trying to obtain through a different lending company. Basically to work/cheat the system!)

What would you guys say?

Usually when you can't get a loan for what you want, even though you think you can swing it, you shouldn't. And I wouldn't buy the wife a new car if she's not even working.

Buy one beater in cash, save up some $, and see how you guys like having no payment at all.

I need more info. Like the total square foot of your house. I mean really, whats a woman need the car for? How far is the distance between the bedroom and the kitchen? Can't she just walk it?

You could finance the first one through the dealer, then the next day get cash advances on multiple credit cards and pay cash for the second car. That's the way I would do it.

He said she takes the little ones to school.

That is the stupidest thing you have EVER said  I hope you were just kidding about getting a cash advance on a credit card

Let me just say one thing. Where there is a will, there is a way. A good salesperson/dealership could make it happen if you have decent enough credit.

Don't forget "And then file bankruptcy!".

Seriously, though, I am interested what the pros recommend. Interesting financial situation.

If I'm selling the two cars, I recommend they buy them. :) If it's me or a close friend, I say get the wife back to work making something before taking on two car loans.

Cash advances on credit cards are dumb, BUT I have got some good convenience checks from my credit card company, 2.9% fixed rate until the balance is paid off

IMO, I agree with the people saying to get her a cheap-ish used car/van and only have 1 payment. If you don't want your wife/kids in a used vehicle, then buy/lease her the new car and you get a used one. Hell, why not have both of them be nice condition used cars less than 5 years old given your financial situation?

No, but what you do is write them out to yourself as cash, deposit them in your bank account. Once the check clears its your money.

x2, they work great. I've used them to pay monthly payments on many credit cards as well. It really helps take the pressure off from those pain in the ass monthly minimums.
