Auto insurance nearly doubled by adding new driver (16 year old) - is this normal???

They sell insurance by the day. LA Insurance is found next to most Secretary Of State offices so customers can purchase insurance for a day just so they can renew or purchase a registration then drive without insurance afterward.

It is how most drivers in Detroit have plates.

With my 18 yr old son, as long as he had his own car that he insured separate of ours, ours didn't go up that much. His insurance is crazy expensive though. He has one accident when he first started driving. He just leased a new F150 and his ins payments are $500 a month.

Even with his own insurance, yours still went up because of him?

His insurance is crazy expensive though. What does he pay?

At 18 he leases a new F150......and pays "crazy expensive" insurance?

:spend:

Yea, he got a great job union construction job right out of high school. Tons of overtime. He lives in my basement, eats all my food, and saves his money for expensive toys. Our ins still went up some because he lives in our house.

Did he have a cosigner? If so, I would believe he leveraged a parent for that?

Linked by not only name, but using the same address spins up the cost too.

To rectify it, a new address that isn't shared between the youngin & parents is how I've successfully dropped the excessive michigan auto insurance rapes, I mean rates.

State Farm told me roughly double with a new driver. He also told me put him on the oldest vehicle etc and that would help. We bought him a 2002 Ranger we're fixing up now for when he turns 16 so we'll see then.

First, thanks to everyone for the responses. Now I'm seeing why my girlfriend's niece has her car plated in Indiana where her dad lives.

Secondly, f*ck this is frustrating...and ridiculous. I bought her a 2004 Sebring from my buddy's mom in hopes that just having her insured on that vehicle or having it assigned to her alone would help. Clearly not.

Hi! give me a shout and i'd be more than happy to run some numbers for you and see what i can do

Just wanted to follow up...Sean was able to save me $1400/year on the car insurance right off the top...AND we've got better coverage now as well.

Thanks again to everyone for the input and to Sean for making it happen.

Now if anyone knows how to turn on the snow machine, please do...I bought another sled two weeks ago and fucked it up for everyone. Sorry.

When I was younger I leased my Mom an Exploder. The truck was in my name but I never drove it. The insurance was CRAZY expensive. I had to sign an exclusion that I was not to drive the truck. I couldn't drive the truck I paid for.
