Auto insurance nearly doubled by adding new driver (16 year old) - is this normal???

My daughter got her license in early December and by adding her to our existing policy (autos and homes are with the same carrier) our auto policy nearly doubled (went from $3200/year to $6500/year). We have three cars listed as daily drivers and two toys I have in storage (just theft/fire/acts of nature for coverage for the toys) and two homes (primary residence and one rental). Previously it was just my girlfriend and myself (She's 50 and I'm 46) and neither of us have had an accident or ticket in forever.

I have an agent that supposedly shopped around and she claims this was the best she could find. Just wondering if this is normal or if she's full of shit and was just too lazy to shop around as she claimed?

Thanks in advance for the input/feedback.

Normal. A divorced guy I know just quoted adding his kid to his policy (who don't live with him) and his company raised his rates and refused to lower them. You are screwed on your rates if you acknowledge having a kid. All you can do is get the best deal you can.

Can you exclude your daughter from all of your vehicles except the one she will be driving?

Im curious to hear some viable options, that's CRAZY expensive!

Pretty sure you & I are paying auto insurance for
all those who aren't......and there is a lot of them!

Teenage drivers are higher risk, but that is the "in"
to higher rates that include the "unseen uninsured",
or so I believe.

Your insurance company will know. They have access to Michigan DMV records
that show all licensed drivers at your address.

It pays to have a different address for children :secret:

Progressive treats teen driver fairly well. Even when I had my home & car insurance bundled together my previous insurance couldn't touch the rate Progressive quoted. Go to their website and you can get a quote. If you pay everything on-line you get another discount, along with a good grades discount, and if you go the paperless route you save even more.

My parents had to sign something saying that i was excluded from their policy.

I had my own insurance when I was a young driver and my parents rate wasn't affected from what I can remember.

If that is an option it might be better for the OP, assuming the teenager's policy wasn't $4k/ year.

I have a 18yo that just started driving.... I called my insurer (AAA) and wanted to throw insurance on another car (I have many) .... they said no, they will not insure her.
Looked at another underwriter and they wanted 400+ a month. 20/40/20.
I tried several companies (Ill be calling you Sean) but they were even more.....
No wonder 16yo's no longer drive. Insurance cost is insane.
I talk with family out state, they pay less than 1/2 what I pay... and all of their cars are 100% covered on collision..... no so for me. (My wife & I are in the cheapest category 56-65-no accidents claims or tickets in 30 years near 850 credit)> I have intransit plates that cost a butt load to have through another insurer). Even registration out state is like 50 bucks.
Not sure how the laws apply in Michigan but thinking about registering & insuring the vehicles in another state..... even if I have to buy another house or property in another state.... it would be cheaper.... I see people do it all the time. (snowbirds) . Not sure how the laws apply, but trying to keep insurance on 8-10 vehicles just aint happening.

Just play by the hood rules.... temporary insurance to register for tabs and them roll around uninsured. If you get into an accident, just flee the scene lol

You know... we make fun of it, but its very true. Some 65% of vehicle in Detroit are uninsured(That's another reason why no one stops for a accident). Michigan is #1 for insurance cost. The #2 state is 165% cheaper. Think about that for a moment. "165%". The legislature in this state is predominately employed by the insurance industry (we have a part time legislature).
My suggestion is to make a pool, just like the catastrophic pool we all pay into (well, those of us that have insurance pays into it. ). That pool is over 12 billion today. If another penny is never deposited into it it will sustain itself in interest for ever. We could do the same for the 20/40/20 the state Requires Michigan vehicles to carry. Put a dime on a gallon of gas (or more) and the monies into a pool. Everyone is covered. No more paying separate for 4-5 vehicles.... pay as you drive. You want collision or comp you buy it separate. Bean counter could figure out the exact amount needed & electric cars.

Holy jesus, and here I was thinking my $1,012 per year, full coverage with gap 25/50/25, $500 ded, was a little much. Guess I will keep my mouth shut lol. I have progressive for about 4 years now.

What is a LA Insurance?

They sell insurance by the day. LA Insurance is found next to most Secretary Of State offices so customers can purchase insurance for a day just so they can renew or purchase a registration then drive without insurance afterward.
