Auto insurance and theft.

In light of my recent scare (parked car destroyed by driver high on drugs, arrested for DUI), I decided to protect my car the best I could to avoid financial hardship in the even that it should happen again.

I have comprehensive with a $100 deductible (apparently the lowest progressive offers).

Now I asked the guy about my stereo and it's coverage. I have a Kenwood KVT 614 flip out dvd player in the car. The guy I talked to over at progressive told me that in the even that it is stolen, it would be covered, up to $1000, less my deductible. I mentioned to him that progressive has no way of knowing what kind of head unit is in my car, so how can they know?

According to him they go by your word. I was kind of puzzled by this. When I had AAA, an inspector looked my car over. He inspected the wheels, body, interior and wrote out a report. When I had to file a claim, they could see that the damage happened while the insurance was in force.

Progressive doesn't operate this way apparently, and it kind of scares me.

So if somebody steals my stereo, I can just call and say "Hey, my $1000 head unit got ripped off" and they will replace it with another one?

I asked the guy if there was somewhere I should take my car to have it inspected, because I also got a set of 17" wheels from a B7 Audi, and I want to be sure that those are covered as well in the event that they are stolen. Again he said it was not necessary.

I just don't want run around should I ever need to file a claim.

Anybody have any experience in filing a claim when the company has no records of their own about what they're covering? If my stereo got ripped off, I'd be livid if they offered me a factory Audi cassette deck.

Keep the receipt and take a picture of the unit installed in the car. Some adjusters will take your word, some will want some proof.

Like I told him, I got this HU back in like Jan of 2010 or 2011 (I don't remember), and I have no receipt. I can get pictures though.

I know AAA offers what they call "aftermarket riders" that will cover aftermarket items you've put on your car, wheels, performance parts, stereo systems etc. Not sure if this is common practice for all insurance companies though.

I had a Pioneer AVIC Z110bt in my TBSS when it was stolen. I had to supply a receipt for it. My insurance co (state farm) replaced the radio with the most current model and all the parts necessary to install it. They also gave me a voucher to have it installed.

And if you ever need to file a claim with progressive I run a shop that is on there direct repair program I'll take care you

Get a rider. Progressive's base limit on aftermarket equipment is $1000. If the wheels are stolen, I'm guessing it will cost more than $1000 to replace them. Take pictures. Keep receipts.

Yeah, I can do that.

I would just feel more comfortable if they had me bring it in for an inspection and filled out a report of their own with an appraisal of what it's worth so I have peace of mind in knowing how much I will get and that I'll be covered in the event that I need to use my comprehensive.

Get the cp&e coverage for whatever amount u figure your wheels and radio equipment is worth. Take pics and document everything u have and what irs worth. Progressive is pretty good at taking care of there customers. The more value u put your coverage at the more the premium is going to be just an fyi.

Progressive doesn't have Agreed Value insurance. You almost have to value the car yourself in case of loss. It's cheap ass insurance.

Definitely take pics.. I had progressive motorcycle insurance and requested an agreed value on the bike and they wanted 2 side view pics and pics of aftermarket parts to keep on file. And then I got another bike that got stolen. They just wanted to see pics of the aftermarket parts installed and their value. They paid me out well on the stolen bike. I hope they don't bend me over when its time for insurance on my new motorcycle.

Once Progressive started that shit with Snapshot, that wrote them off from ever having my business.....
But it would be freakin hilarious to put one of those on an open track day car.
