ATV VIN: Is there anyway to look up an ATV VIN and find out who it is titled to?

Here is the deal. I bought an ATV off of a friends dad who purchased it new back in 1993 from the honda dealer, with cash. According to the SOS and everyone else I talk to, it should have a title. His dad said that it never had a title. Then he said he wasnt sure and if it did, it got stolen when his safe got stolen a few years back. I know sometimes the dealers take the certificate of origin or whatever and send it to the sos to get put into the new owners name, and then its mailed to the buyer, or whatever.. I can see why he doesnt think it had a title, or doesnt remember.. it was 17 years ago. I know he could apply for a duplicate title IF it was truely put into his name, but I dont wanna hassle him to wait at secretary of state as he is very busy. It would be nice if a bill of sale would suffice. Has anyone had an experience with this type of issue, or know a way to find out if the vin was ever truely titled into his name? Sorry if this is confusing.

Thanks,
Justin

Pretty sure duplicate title is the best way to handle it. I believe the MCO is used for a new car dealer to file for a title for the new vehicle for the new buyer. I'm sure he just forgot about the title.

As far as I know u only get a bill of sale when its brand new. You can take that an apply for a title, but not required by law to my knowledge. I don't think u need a title on ATVs that are not road legal.

I bought my 2007 Raptor 700 brand new and it came with a title. We actually got fucked up north and the cops ran our vins to see if they were stolen. How could they finance if it didn't come with a title for the leinholder to have?

Thanks for the replies! I have a title for my 2004 foreman (a different machine than the one mentioned). Last time I was upnorth with this quad (the 93), one of the people in our group got their VIN checked by the us forestry service.. I kinda wondered about this one that I was riding!! lol

If you get me the VIN, I SHOULD be able to see who the original purchaser was thru Honda. Post it here or PM me, and I'll get you any info that is available to me.
