Are any of those cheap nav systems worth it?

I want to get my parents a portable navigation system for Christmas, they travel all over the country these days with their horses.

Does anyone have one of the newer portable style nav systems (Tom Tom, Tiger, etc) and how do they compare to the ones that come in vehicles these days? I'm looking in the $500-1,000 range.

TIA

We've got a really nice one at work. I forget the exact name but we use it all the time on road trips at work. I beleive its $499. No subscription. Just plug it into the cig. lighter and it boots up. Fully touch screen. If you want call my work and ask for Dennis. Tell him Tom told you about it. 810-232-2400 If it makes any difference I was thinking about getting it for my parents this Christmas too.

Garmin is the way to go. I bought it for my parents for their Birthdays this year and they really like it. It looks small, but it is easy to use, and still easy to read. They aren't overly into technology and they haven't had any problems with it.

Tomtom got bad reviews... sad... I know.

Oh yeah, keeping with that the one at my work is really easy to use. I'd fully trust my grandpa to learn it in a few hours and he can only write emails and play mindsweeper. Still cant think of the name. Give me a few minutes and I'll find you a link.

Ok, I can't find it. Just call 810-232-2400 and ask for Dennis. Tell him you are a friend of Tom and you are looking for the navigation system that is on the wall at work. I guarentee you will love it!

I've been -very- happy with my Garmin 330.

I was looking at the 320 and 330 for my wife's parents for Christmas. The difference is that one is SD card based and the other is HDD based, right? Is it worth getting the 330 for $90-100 more? SD cards are pretty cheap these days.

I got the Magellan 760 for the wife I think I paid $600 you could go with the 360 but it only has one region in at a time, so if you travel a lot you need to down load the region your going to. The 760 has Canada & Europe preinstalled.

I like it better than the Garmin because I felt the moving voice commands are a little better and it gives you phone numbers of POIs Like restaurants which come in handy.

The few times I have been in the car with mdhmi, his 330 has been impressive as hell. It found us food in Norwalk (bonus points)..

I have researched and learned that Garmin and Magellan are the two stronger companies out there. I actually bought my wife a Cobra unit that had similar features. It works well, but acts up if it gets too cold. Do some internet research and you will find reviews, etc. And make the choice based on the features you are looking for.

We sell the tom tom where I work and I'd say its pretty damn good. Much better than Garmin in my opinion - I know a few people who use the Garmin and say its nothing but a headache.

Thanks guys. They primairly go from Detroit to the east coast and to Texas. Having Canada would be nice because they occasionally head up through Toronto. They'll definately make use of the restaurant and gas locator features.

Do any of them (or all of them) allow you to store addresses that you frequent?

They're as much into their prize horses as we are into our horsepower...

Yes I think my can do the infra red thing from my phone or ipac as well

Holy crap they've come down in price. Last year you couldn't touch one for much less than a grand. Now the Magellan 760 is $298, the Garmins (340 and 350) are both around $500.

Cool...

Hmmm. I didn't know mine had an SD slot. Hmm. There have been a few updates to the 330 including traffic/construction info. I'd at least get a 330, but that's me.

No, you don't. The 320 runs off the SD card so your map memory is limited to the size of your card. The 330 has the HDD so everything's on there all the time.

Garmin vs Magellin: I read some reviews on Amazon and people seemed to say that Garmin was better... faster rerouting, easier to use, etc.
