AOD or AODE/4r70w?

Well basically im sick of t-5's taking a shit. Time to go automatic. Should I just go with an AOD setup with a shift kit and nice convertor or should I step it up to the Electronic version and get a Baumannator to control it. Mind you this is a street car for the most part, im not overly concerned about having the perfect shift everytime. Will a build AOD get the job done for me? I would like to save as much money as possible..

And also this needs to be able to handle 550+hp

go to clickclickracing.com....lots of good AOD/AOD-E info.

The C4 sucks.....no OD is stupid....plus C4's have an issue with flaring into 3rd.

MY AOD's have been faster then his AOD's and Dan is a good builder.

I would go with a 4r70. Parts are easier to find as well as good cores. AOD cores are starting to get a bit more scarce.

Well my buddy has an AOD out of his 90' that I can pick up for dirt cheap. I would just need a convertor and supporting mods to make it handle some power

things to keep in mind:

1.) 4R70W is for Mod Motor only (specific bell housing) The AOD-e has similar parts as the 4R70W with the only differences being the gear set having a steeper 1st gear, so the AOD-e or AOD gearset will be better suited for a turbo car
2.) AOD's can be retrofitted with all the 4R70W peices (2" rev drum, mechicanical diode, stamped steel direct drum), which are all stock parts, so cost is somewhat cheap.
3.) AOD-e's require a trans controller (Baumann or TCI) which cost $500 est.
4.) AOD downfalls are non-lock up convertor in performance application and dealing with a TV cable......
5.) AOD-e downfalls - convertor cost for lock-up style are expensive, TCS control box is expensive, tuning lurning curve)

If cost is not an issue, then the AOD-e with all of the latest mods and a TCS with lock-up convertor is the way to go. If you are more budget minded, then an AOD can be had for pretty cheap with a nice set of upgrades and convertors are a dime a dozen.

I have an AOD in my car, which is a 418W with an 88mm Turbo, so we have similar combo's. If you want to talk then email me and I will send you my phone #.

Better to start with a 4r70 and if you budget doesn't allot the fancy electronic controller buy a Manual VB kit from Transgo.

Yeah I did read up that the 3.8L mustang 4r would bolt right up. I considered a manual vb setup but heard that it wasnt good on the trans because it keeps line pressure @ max all the time which will burn the pump up

i know that the manual VB is the way to go for my AOD, but I hate to get rid of the automatice feature........since it is a street car.

Get the vacum modulator option. Works great.

i plan on putting a aode with 4r70 internals behind my motor, that's what i recommend. i'm planning on running a mvb so i don't have to have electronics involved.

Any idea what its going to cost you? I already have a couple quotes on getting one built but that wasnt including the mvb

well i'll be putting it together myself so that saves costs. i've already got a aode case also. so basically all i'll be buying is a 4r70, some nice clutches for it, better input shaft, and mvb. i think the most important part will be the converter, i'm thinking of oging with an edge converter with a 3500 stall which is right around 700. i'd like to keep my complete setup under 1600 but who knows.
