just did a story on a man losing his brakes and hes going down what looked like the highway, cops on the loudspeaker yelling at him, hes in a full panic saying he doesnt want to die, was gonna jump out of the vehicle etc.. shows the police car get in front of him, let the suv ram into him and slow both vehicles down, run up and pull the keys out of the ignition...at the end the reporter says "they pulled it off just in time, there was an intersection just 2 miles away."

it gets better... at the end of the story they say if this ever happens to you, try to downshift the vehicle, if that doesnt work, hit the parking brake...if THAT doesnt work...turn the ignition off and take the keys out! common sense says in most vehicles in the last 30 or so years will lock the steering wheel and then you cant stop OR steer...wow.

not to mention, dude on the road with no brakes. throw the bitch in neutral and coast, he aint gonna go no 2 miles coasting.

i turned it on part way through the story but the whole thing was just...wrong. lol

US chrylser vehicles dont use column locks anymore. not sure it this has anything to do with it or not

I was on that freeway when that happened... It was wide open... Even past 27 mile rd. Man, the media blows shit way out of porportion.
And the advice? Why/how would you "pull your keys out of the ignition" while still rolling? Slide gear selector in Neutral, turn key off.. Coast to a stop.

exactly my point. the dude straight freaked out. and pulling your keys out of the ignition is a terrible idea.

funny story. last friday i was driving down 69 from flint eastbound. and ran into some construction just past an overpass. cars were stopped in the middle of the highway, and there was brake lights swerving all around. admittedly, i was on the phone with a customer at the time. i proceeded to drive left, off of the road and into the median in my truck while applying steady brakes to slow my truck down without having to "panic stop" also giving the cars behind me enough room to stop, i was over in the grass, the car behind me let me back in with a wave and i proceeded on my way when traffic started moving again. the customer i was on the phone with never knew what happened, i never missed a beat. driving just freaks some people out and thats scary.

I saw that. I dont know which is more stupid, the guy in the exploder, or the tv station for airing it.

I had a situation years ago heading down 16mi. rd. where I saw a guy pass while driving and was heading straight for the mound rd intersection. I was able to get in front of him with my car and get him stopped just before he blew through the intersection into oncoming traffic. Ended up he was diebetic and had passed out from insulin reaction.

exactly!! it's a shame common sense is so uncommon nowadays.

I was thinking the same last night, take the keys out. nice info....

I knew a guy a while back that had a Grand Prix, maybe early 90's model.
Had the column lock up on him while he was driving on 96 in Livonia, went up the side of the highway...
Totaled car, nobody hurt, but scared the shit out of him.

I saw that on the news, people are that dumb? Was surprised to see a middle aged guy get out of the explorer all shaken up, darwin hasn't taken him yet?
