What's a good set cost ? About $700 then ??

Let me check with one of my employees when he's in tomorrow. He's got about 8 sets I believe he said and he may part with one them for a decent price.. He's pretty OCD so i'd bet they are spotless/perfect. His band actually opened up for the Dan Band last year in Royal Oak.

PM rbod hes a neil peart wanna be

HEY...get it right. I'm a Mike Portnoy wanna be.

Craigslist is the way to go really. I've found really nice kits on there for less than $300 and for $500 you can get a nice set with cymbals and stands. Just some quick searching found me these:

Super nice kit here - http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/msg/1998555675.html

I've owned this same set in a different color and it's a great kit. - http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/msg/1998638050.html

Also, I've bought stuff from this guy before. He has a house full of drums. He's a little "eccentric" but he's a good guy and takes great care of his stuff. You can call him and he'll set you up with a whole kit in your price range. - http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/msg/2008044745.html

Don't get a cheap eBay set, it isn't worth it. They are cheap and sound like crap.

I got my first kit at Mike Carey Music in Lincoln Park on Fort st. The dude there is awesome and will cut you a great deal. I got a Tama Swingstar (wood, made in Japan) kit with 2 toms, floor tom, bass drum, snare, a crash, and all the hardware to set up and play. He even threw in like 3 pair of sticks, pedal, etc. I paid $300 I believe for that kit and it sounded awesome. It was also a red wine color and in mint condition. Many of the Tama kits are made of plastic and are made in Taiwan, but this was an older model in immaculate condition, made of wood, and when they were still made in Japan.

I had no trouble selling it a couple years later for $400 when I was in a pinch.

A used kit is just as good as a new one, just make sure it's in good shape and the paint isn't peeling. I'd go with a Tama, Pearl, Yamaha, etc. Stay away from anything on eBay that's 250 for an entire kit, they're total junk, even if it is for a first kit.

If you get him a nice kit he'll be able to keep it for a long time, and just add to it as time goes by. A kit like that he'll outgrow very early.

Try a pawn shop that has a lot of music equipment, or a small music store that has new and used. Don't know if you're near Mike Carey but if you are check him out, I would highly recommend his shop. He's a stand up guy and will get your kid on a quality kit for a good price, ready to be set and and play.

Which Tama kit was that? Unless you are talking about the Mirage kits that are made of Acrylic and are $2000+.

I thought he was going back to Dream Theater after touring with A7X this year?

Nah. He wanted time apart from Dream Theater because he was burnt out of the 25-year write-record-tour-repeat process and wanted to take 2011 off and they want to record in January so he said peace. Not sure how good the new stuff will be since he wrote, sang, produced, and played thus having a huge influence on the music.

Thanks guys I know I won't be getting the Ebay ones now. Went to a local music store today and am gonna check out those CL ones also.
