Anyone have a friend with michigan state police, or other departments?

To clarify, no I am not in trouble. I have been working in IT for about 10 years now, after 4 in the army. Frankly, I'm bored of it, and tired of positions coming and going, and being out of work. As a kid I always wanted to be a police officer, and am beginning to take steps to make that happen. I have signed up for the initial test in the application process to be a michigan state trooper(Dec. 2nd @ 830am), and am just curious if anyone here knows someone who knows someone that may be able to 'assist' with the selection process. It seems like MSP would be the ideal place to try, but I would be open to any department in the US.

Ouch that ticket sucks. I got that same ticket as a kid. But it was a construction zone so it was doubled. 130 over the speed limit. Rescheduled it once and the cop didn't show. You should try that. Some city's let you adjourn twice.
 
OP:
If you are able to, maybe chat with some MSP folks that were prior service. If no network exists, building one yourself could be better.

Warren can be a huge pain in the dickery for traffic tickets. Lawyer up is my suggestion.
 
I have friends in the Oakland County Sherriff's. Office One on the Road and One works the Jail and to talk to them they like their jobs but I wouldn't say Love

Thats one of my good friends, he just picked up his ZO6 maybe a month earlier. Right before that he got popped he was top of 4th and then into tth for maybe 5 secs wide open, so he was going faster lol.

I dont think any government motors cars are on my radar, but and fun car I get would do 130..... what do I look like a farmer? I used to top the M3 out twice a week on my way to work lol.
 
Most departments are going to want you to pass Police academy on your dime. Once you pass it you have two years to get hired.
My guess is you will have to take a civil servant test first. Top test scores will get a interview with HR.
With HR you will have to answer the exact same list of questions from a panel of 4-5-6 people asking the exact same list of questions to each applicant that gets accepted.
The same panel gets to score your answers 1-10 with some of the stupidest questions that will have nothing to do with your employment. (Key here is not to stop talking-throw twenty answers at them)
Top scores move on. After that intense vetting and background checks...
But with most Departments getting away from traditional pensions and with current trend of challenging police officers & attacking them, I have to ask, why the hell would anyone want the Job of a Officer any more?

MSP is the toughest to get in for Law Enforcement in Michigan besides the DNR. I know they are planning a MSP Academy in June of 2016. I am currently going through the hiring process and I am on step ~7 of 13. After the civil service exam you will have to NEOGOV application and make sure every box is filled out on that. Read the instructions very cafefully and get that turned in ASAP. Once the NEOGOV application starts you will have a recruiter who will be communication with you via e-mail for the process from there. After the NEOGOV app it is on to a online questionnaire and agility testing. The agility testing you will have to do more than ~35 situps, ~35 pushups, a 16" vertical jump, and a 1/2 mile shuttle run in under 4 minutes 36 seconds. However based on your age that number can be lower, for example, I am 32 and I had to do 31 push ups and 33 sit up and I had to do the shuttle run in 4min 38secs. They give you a score card with your minimum requirements when you show up for testing. Once you complete that you go back to meet in front of a panel to do a prequalification interview to see if you qualify to go on to background checks, mental, vision, and hearing testing. Then from there if you pass those things you will put into a hiring interview which is more in depth and just like what DetroitGearbox said, random questions, and see how you respond and answer them. Then from there you get the word whether you are in or not. Then the MSP Academy is paramilitary designed, so if you have military experience that should be a breeze for you. However once you are offered the position to start the police academy you are hired in as an MSP trooper. How well you do overall in the academy determines who gets first choice of post to work it.

This explains why I've never seen obese troopers. Lol. Local PDs have some of the most out of shape cops. Especially in warren.

The MSP screening is tougher than others I think, they have higher standards and hold the troopers to it. The 1/2 mile shuttle run would be the hardest part, only because its a shuttle run. The rest of it seems to be fairly easy if you are in ok shape
 
My family is full of cops ...
( NO ... I can't help anyone with tickets)
From what I hear MSP is doing a large academy class this time around Good Luck
My brother retired 3 years ago after 27 years as a cop
Gets 70 k a year for life retirement pay
You can make a good living but be ready to put in long hours
Nights weekend holidays

Benefits like this are a thing of the past. Most places don't have pension systems anymore and most are two teir wages too.

Did you pursue this? They started an academy a few weeks ago and they are doing 2 more this summer. Also they are looking for more female recruits if anyone knows any ladies who are interested.
 
A kid I know just got shot down by MSP (bad choice of words :lol:) - he
scored just a hair under, so he is a "no go". He is a great kid, but as others
have stated, MSP standards are high.

I & others have told the kid to apply at the Sheriffs office and they are
considering him. The county is pretty easy to get into, you'll simply start
at the jail and move on to road patrol and so on.

The county is a good option if MSP doesn't work out for whatever reason.
